I'd love an espn screenlet. I'd like to be able to choose which of these headlines it displays.
I guess it's just a glorified rss reader so maybe it'll be easy. There's one like this for mac I think. I hope some other people like sports. Maybe for a more general appeal - this could be a tabbed rss reader with an espn theme option and other generic themes.
I think it'd be really cool to have tabs for each headline you've enabled.
Exapmle:
ESPN name/logo Espn.com
---------------------------------------------------
NFL : NBA : College Football : [other tab] : :
---------------------------------------------------
story 1 ................................................ :
story 2 ................................................ :
story 3 ................................................ :
story 4 ................................................ :
story 5 ................................................ :
story 6 ................................................ :

how about a myspace screenlet in the same vein as the facebook screenlet.... more people use myspace and the facebook screenlet is a great screenlet to base it from.

I don't want to sound needy, but I think a screenlet that can read from and display google calenders would be great. Maybe show one, two, or three days of events with color coding if possible.
edit: this might help? http://code.google.com/apis/calendar/overview.html

i think id like a bandwidth usage screenlets that not only shows current up/down speeds but also shows total up/downloaded as well as a graph showing how much bandwidth has been used in the last 10-30 seconds or something. its pretty important to me that its possible to set how much 100% of the graph represents, for example 500kbps

yeah its possible to use the calendar api , however it would require that everyone downloads and intalls about 3 seperate packages , and that isnt good for screenlets
dont worry im going to make a kick ass news reader for espn and others ;)

I don't know if screenlets are the right tool for the job, but I really, really, really wanna, animenu (http://www.blackfiveservices.co.uk/animenu.shtml) like tool with real transparency.
I use animenu to start mythtv and, with a little script, to choose when to shut down, i.e. now of after the end of a selected recording.
It would be great if my remote's menu could fit in with the composited desktop.
Thanks for listening...

-- preface this with the fact that I have no experience with coding really, and have little to no idea how these things work.
You said don't ask you to make an msn clone, which is all and well, but how difficult would it be to either a. make a program such as pidgin have true transparent backgrounds, or b. make some sort of frontend for pidgin in the form of a widget?
again, I don't expect either of these to be really that feasible or someone would have done it already. I just was wondering, since none of the code for screenlets looks too long or complex, and programs such as gnome-terminal have the transparency feature already.

I've been looking for a Flickr screenlet. One that lets you pick which photosets to display like a slideshow.
The ability to use multiple photosets simultaneously and to use different frames (themes) would be huge plus.
Also, is there any good info out there to learn how to make these screenlets?
