Good idea this thread :-)
Could you re-make your deb package with all screenlets (with packager extension) I can see on your website ? Just in one package or create a new package will call screenlets-extra.deb.

Thanks for this :D ...
It would also be cool if we could create a package with "extra" or "unsupported" screenlets so people can install a bigger amount of third-party screenlets in one go. Would also reduce the incompatibility problems many people have with older screenlets. What would you think about that?

I used to do that but there were just too many screenlets :D I' m sorry but I really don't have the time to build a new package every time a screenlet is updated.

You will able to do that sometimes with the better screenlets. I understand you can't do that when each new screenlet is created.

This is the thread for Ubuntu Screenlets repository. Post your issues/improvements/fixes/etc related to packages and repo here.
Some "thinkings"....
If a user chooses packages maybe its better to also include a remove, no mess
with earlier versions.
sudo apt-get remove --purge screenlets && sudo apt-get install screenlets

I followed the instructions and purged my 0.9 before installing 0.10. When I run the manager, my NowPlaying applet doesn't appear.
In the repo, there is a screenlets-extra package with no version and therefore cannot be installed.
Can someone help me get the NowPlaying applet working?

You can still simply copy third-party screenlets into $HOME/.screenlets/ ... (the manager does the same, it just tries to guess the correct version to avoid non-working screenlets)

Confusing.....
Should we use .screenlets or /usr/local/share/screenlets ?
I just fires up Nautilus with gksudo nautilus and just move them from Desktop (download>unpack) to screenlets.
screenlets-manager > enable

Proper way is to install them to ~/.screenlets

That's true. I never thought of multi-user PCs ... I will try to add something that allows launching the manager as root and then installing screenlets into the system-wide path.

Yup... no problems with Gutsy and Screenlets...:)

http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Updated+old+3rd+party+Screenlets?content=64806
All screenlets/desklets
http://www.gnome-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=165
RYX is trying to find a better solution

I'm now running screenlets version 0.0.12 on Kubuntu Gutsy, and very happy with them.
As for screenlets running on a multi-user PC, this has been (partially) solved in version 0.0.12. The name of the temp file now contains the user name. I had to download the sources, because the last version in the repository is still 0.0.10.
However, the first user to log on creates the /tmp/screenlets directory with write permissions only for the owner.
I have added a few lines to to /etc/rc.local, which test if the /tmp/screenlets directory already exists, and, if necessary, creates it. It then changes ownership to a group me and all my family members I share the PC with belong to, and gives write permission to the group. It's not all that elegant, but it's all I could come up with that actually works :-D.
Maybe this will help someone else as well.
Cheers,
Paul
