Either the video player in question needs to use the X11 output device, or she simply needs to use mplayer. X-Video output and compiz do not work well together with the open source radeon and intel drivers.

This is a bug in the intel drivers (affects free ati drivers too). An ugly workaround is to use X11 (No Xv) video output in whatever player you're using. Also, there's a patch for mplayer that allows it to use the Compiz video playback plugin, which gives video that transforms with compiz's effects (cube, transparency, scale, etc): http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/compiz/2007-July/002494.html
Trevinho has a mplayer package for Ubuntu with the patch in his main 3v1n0 repo (*not* eyecandy)
