Just look at this page: http://www.go-compiz.org/index.php?title=Discuss
Could you allow access to modify wiki only for trusted users?

I guess I'll have to start locking pages!

UPDATE: I checked ALL pages on the wiki, and none of them contain spam as of now. As a safety measure I'll see if I can restrict editing to administrators and trusted users. 8)

UPDATE: I can restrict pages one by one so only registered users have access, or just sysops have access. I guess that the site owner has more options than this? Because if only registered members have access, then its the same thing, because they can still edit stuff, and if just sysops have access, then no one can edit stuff, just a few of us. Would you agree that just sysops have access, for now?

Am I a trusted user? :)

And don't allow editing to all registered users.
It's too easy to register, but not also to be trusted.

As long as there is something to stop the bots we should be ok. Manual spamming is normally minor and easy to revert so they do not bother so much, I suspect we were attacked by a bot.

The "most users ever online"-statistic is also quite mysterious (749 users, while we only have 421 registered users - and 328 guests are uncommon) - looks like some bot or DOS-attack, too. (Or maybe we simply catched more attention ... :) ?)

I thought the same thing too... I was actually on the site and saw it shoot up...

Anyway - I checked the usual suspects and we were dugg, someone linked a forum post to the front page of digg. So its good in a way, those 749 are the ones that could get through before it came to its knees ;)

I'm in the process of locking down every page on the wiki. I had to go out to do some stuff, but I'm back now.

UPDATE: All pages have been locked down and only sysops have permission to edit or move pages. 8)

That is plain dumb.

A wiki (IPA: [ˈwɪ.kiː] <WICK-ee> or [ˈwiː.kiː] <WEE-kee>[1]) is a website that allows the visitors themselves to easily add, remove, and otherwise edit and change some available content, sometimes without the need for registration. This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for mass collaborative authoring.

I know mate, you don't have to be rude. This is just a temporary solution to spam, while we figure out how to only allow trusted users, etc. If I can't find something decent, then I'll just unlock the pages and if spam comes up I'll clean it manually, happy?

Locking down the pages isn't fixing the problem.
I just deleted some more "snow nerd" graffiti off of the Discuss page (http://www.go-compiz.org/index.php?title=Discuss).

P.S. What is a sysops and do I get paid? :P

Hey guys, imnotpc and I have been trying to make the wiki allow just a specific group of persons to edit, move, and maintain the wiki. Its quite straightforward, but it does need some sql twaking. I found this guide from the mediawiki documentation: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:User_levels

The guide mentions a Special:Userrights page, but I cannot access such page on the wiki, I get an error saying the following: The action you have requested is limited to users with the "userrights" permission assigned. See Compiz:Administrators.

But the Compiz:Administrators page doesn't exist, as confirmed by this message: There is currently no text in this page, you can search for this page title in other pages or edit this page.

What can I do? Who is the most powerful admin of the wiki who can help with this? Thanks!
