You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
compiz: Depends: compiz-decorator
compiz-gnome: Depends: compiz-gtk (= 1:0.3.6-1ubuntu13) but it is not going to be installed
compizconfig-settings-manager: Depends: python-compizconfig but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
__________________________________________________ ________________________

It should also be mentioned that I'm having difficulties manually editing the
etc/apt/sources.list Ergo I'm unable to re-write the file.
Get an error about NOT being the owner. What happened here? and how do I fix it?

PS Synaptic won't allow me to update any packages until the "Broken" Packages are resolved... Haven't tried rebooting yet, but I'll keep you up to date.

You seem to have a previous compiz installation which is mucking things up a bit.

Try opening synaptic and removing ANYTHING compiz related, then try installing.
Also, make sure you don't have conflicting repos.

Are you editing (or trying to edit) /etc/apt/sources.list as a regular user? It must be done as root (or using sudo).

Conflicting repos? would I check that from the command line?
I had attempted editing manually, but unfortunately no liuck even with sudo. I may have to recover the root password, which should prove to be fun with opensuse, and a VM on one of two windows partitions.

Thank you for the prompt reply, that was very helpful

By conflicting repos, I meant are you using 2 different compiz/fusion repos?

If you are you would probably know without checking.

I can't think why you aren't able edit sources.list. How are you trying to do it if I may ask?

OK, Here's what I think might be happening based upon what you've said so far.

Thoery #1 I have the repo's provided from Ubuntu + Trevino's Repos. Conflict?
Theory #2 I have 2 Broken packages when I pull up synaptic package manager?
Could this have been cause by the conflicting repo's?
Theory # 3 Gnome does not give me access to any Title bars, I have to minimize and maximize with on the task bar. could this be caused by incorrect Compiz setup?

That's all I've got right now, oh and I don't know how to uninstall.
Based on that, what should I do? And how would one check for the current driver installed?

I want to make certain I have the Nvidia drivers installed, which I believe I do.

Ubuntu provides its own Compiz packages, but those feature a far older version of Compiz than the one offered by Trevino's repository. From the output you pasted above, it looks like Ubuntu offers version 0.3.6 whereas Trevino offers version 0.5.1+git. Please uninstall any and all Compiz-related packages of any version to ensure that you are starting from a clean slate.

Once you've done that, install only those Compiz-related packages with a version number equal to or greater than 0.5.1.

Theory # 3 Gnome does not give me access to any Title bars, I have to minimize and maximize with on the task bar. could this be caused by incorrect Compiz setup?
Any combination of mismatched Compiz/decorators/plugins could have caused that problem. You need to ensure that all Compiz-related components come from the same repository (Trevino's) and that they are all for the same version of Compiz (>= 0.5.1).

That's all I've got right now, oh and I don't know how to uninstall.
Open System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager. Click on Search in the toolbar, and enter "compiz" as the search term. When the list of matching packages come up, look for anything starting with "compiz", "compizconfig" "libdecoration", or "desktop-effects". Right-click on each of those items and select Mark for Complete Removal. Once you've done that, click on Apply in the toolbar.

After everything Compiz-related is removed, you may follow the instructions at this thread (http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=1012) to start over.

I want to make certain I have the Nvidia drivers installed, which I believe I do.
In a console window, enter:
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
If you're using the nVidia driver, it should print some information about the driver version and the compiler used to build it. If the nVidia driver is not loaded or not installed, then you'll receive an error about not being able to find the file.

OK I appreciate the help here and I'm about to go through the steps.

I wanted to post the output for the nvidia driver and ask what it means?
Ergo, is this the proprietary driver? I don't think it is.

Cat OUTPUT
NVRM version: NVIDIA Linux x86 Kernel Module 1.0-9631 Thu Nov 9 17:38:10 PST 2006
GCC version: gcc version 4.1.2 (Ubuntu 4.1.2-0ubuntu4)

One more concern, do I need to remove any Ubuntu Repo's?

Yes, it is a proprietary driver, but with some exceptions (like the infamous black window bug), it's a very good one, so hopefully you won't run into any major problems with it. :)

The output means that you have version 9631 of the nvidia driver installed and loaded, and that it was compiled using GCC 4.1.2 on November 9 of 2006. There's not a lot you can do with that information unless there's a specific problem relating to the version of the driver you're using, which I don't think there is...

Depending on whether your graphic card is supported, you may wish to upgrade to version 9755; it's often said to be the most stable version of the nvidia driver. But before worrying about that, it's probably a good idea to take things a step at a time and get Compiz Fusion working first.

One more concern, do I need to remove any Ubuntu Repo's?
I don't think so. Once Trevino's packages are installed, Ubuntu shouldn't offer to downgrade Compiz back to an older version.

Sorry, I recently found out that Trevino's repository may currently be broken. If you continue to have problems installing or using Trevino's packages after removing all traces of Ubuntu's default version of Compiz, please check this thread:
http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=3153

Amaranth has set up his own Compiz Fusion repository that contains backports of official Compiz Fusion packages from an upcoming version of Ubuntu.

Could I just download all packages manually and install with synaptic?

I'm not familiar enough with Synaptic to answer correctly, but if there is such an option, you're certainly welcome to try it. Automatic dependency resolution may be disabled if you don't add the repository to your sources list, though.

Ok I i think it's safe to say I can take some action now. Do you have the link for Amaranth's Repo? I'll use that for now, my plan is to continue using the current driver unless of course the updated Compiz still does not work, at which point I will move to greater measures.

As far as synaptic, I will Chat with people on the ubuntu forums as there may be specifics involved here.

Deciare already gave you that link :) http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=3153

And I don't see why you would want to manually install the debs instead of adding the repository.

Ok, Compiz 0.5.x is installed
However, I don't seem t have a place to enable desktop effects.
Um, where is the thing in Systems>Preferences?
not compiz-config settings manager, at least i don't think so.

Was this a [solved] then? and also, which "new Thread" - did you mean to link to something here?
