ATI/Compiz-Fusion/XGL Freezes

Hey guys,

I have an ATI x300SE that runs with Ubuntu's Restricted Drivers using their Restricted Drivers Manager. I've also installed Compiz-Fusion from Trevino's repository and XGL from Ubuntu's repository.

Everything works fine, however, after several hours or so, the whole desktop just freezes. Nothing becomes responsive and I have to cut the power to restart the system.

Is there something I can do?

You could try installing 0.5.2 from Amaranth's repo:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/CompizFusion

Maybe that might help, hope so.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, that developmental build will not run on my system. It doesn't start at all, compared to 0.5.1

What happens when you try to start it? Do you get an error message?

0.5.1 works, but 0.5.2 doesn't. However either 0.5.2, ATI Drivers or XGL is causing the system to freeze occasionally.

Use ccsm to enable the crash handler and this will give debug output to show why 0.5.2 is crashing.

As for your freezing system with 0.5.1... Given the problems many people have with fglrx, I think most people would be inclined to tell you that's the problem :-)

You can't mix packages from different repos. Before you switch to Amaranth's PPA repo, you must purge *all* of trevinho's packages: sudo apt-get --purge remove compiz* libcompizconfig* and make sure that trevinho's repo (tuxfamily.org/...) is not in your sources.
