Hey guys,

as you can see I'm new to this forum and I'm also a beginner in the world of linux.
I have installed Ubuntu 7.04 (32bit version) and I have an Nvidia 8800 GTS graphics card.

I went to Nvidia site, downloaded the latest drivers for linux x86 and when I logged in the X server was failing to start. I went back to Nvidia site, made a search based upon my model and found another driver for linux x86 (driver release date: December 2006) which finally had no problems to log me in.

For the record, I even tried Ubuntu's Nvidia glx and Nvidia glx-new drivers but in vain. The X server wouldn't start.

So, i stick with the Nvidia x86 driver that worked, i followed some tutorials on how to install compiz fusion, but when I was typing the "magic" command "compiz --replace" all I could see was the background image of my desktop. The mouse was moving fine, but there were no windows or bars and the keyboard was dead. I couldn't switch to console, nor could I see any activity beyond the movement of the mouse.

Same thing with Beryl, installation smoothly completed, all tests passed, but when I tried to switch to beryl, this time I was able to see the top bar and the terminal window besides the image of the background, the mouse was moving just fine again, but once more, the keyboard was dead. An important notice is that the frame of the terminal window, disappeared when I switched to beryl.

I don't know if I was clear enough about my problem, if you happen to be aware of any solution please help!

Thanx in advance!

Doesn't ubuntu have a "restricted driver" thing that will automatically install and set up your graphics card?

Last time I used ubuntu I couldn't get it working manually but after letting ubuntu do it for me it worked.

As far as I know, ubuntu has 2 types of drivers for nvidia, the nvidia-glx, and the nvidia-glx new. Both of those don't work.

The only driver that worked was the 1.0-9746 from Nvidia site. Even the latest driver is not compatible with my graphics card (or with ubuntu).

I posted another thread, but someone thought that it might be unimportant, so he/she erased it. Thanks a lot guys. I'm having a problem here, and istead of helping me you are deleting my threads!

Once again I'll mention that I use an Nvidia 8800 GTS and I have Ubuntu Feisty installed. I can't get compiz-fusion to run with either of the native ubuntu drivers (nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx new), i've downloaded Nvidia's driver but still when I try to switch to compiz the screen goes white (or the only thing I see is the background) and the only thing that's working is the mouse. Keyboard is also dead.

I tried to install beryl but same problem. Is there anyone who happens to know what could possibly be wrong?

Instead of deleting threads I'd suggest you give me a hand here please.

thanks

No one deleted your old thread:

However, maybe someone should delete this one.

If you're having problems with nvidia's drivers, you're probably better off asking nvidia for help:

As you can see your thread was not deleted. We do not make it a habit or policy to delete threads.

As for the problem you are having with your video card. Firstly you are using the wrong driver. The white screen issue you are experiencing can happen in one of two ways. Either you are using an older driver with your video card or, you are trying to use XGL with Nvidia and not pre loading mesa's libGL. I can see from your post that you are using an older driver and this could very well be the cause of the problem. The 1.0-9746 driver was the initial support for the 8800GTS. I would however recommend using the 1.0-9755 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-9755.html) driver. This driver has repeatedly shown us to work best with the current 8800 series video cards. Yes we have seen installation problems with Nvidia drivers in Ubuntu. That is a Ubuntu/Nvidia problem and not a Compiz/Beryl problem. If you continue to have these problems i would recommend using the Ubuntu forums to get help with installing/updating your Nvidia driver with that particular distro.

adamk: I made a search after going through almost all the pages of the topic and I found nowhere my post. That's why I supposed that someone deleted it. I'm really sorry about that.

Jupiter: I'll try that my friend and I'll let you know if it works

Thanks again and sorry for the trouble

do you have AIGLX installed?
if yes have you logged yourself in to a AIGLX session?
Login Screen >Options > Sessions?

then hit ALT+F2 and type in compiz --replace
if u want compiz to autostart go to System>Administation>Sessions and add it the startup.

Cheers
plus make sure u have desktop eFX unistalled.
