Would it be possible to "rotate" my display entirely with compiz? That would be a nice feature, since proper implementation of xrandr rotation is spotty at best.

(If it's not clear, "rotate" here means "make things look right after I just turned my monitor on its side.)

Maybe it's not the same thing, but I recall there being something for Gnome that flips your display (panels, everything) in 90 degree intervals. Is this something like what you mean?

I can see how this would be useful for people who need to scroll a lot (know lecturers who flip their widescreens 90 degrees so that they don't have to scroll too much through student essays). But (and please someone correct me if I'm wrong) doesn't this depend a lot on X and what is being used to set the resolution?

For instance, I need a rather lowlevel bios hack to get my resolution working with my intel graphics card (915resolution hack). I'm not entirely sure it's the job of the window manager to mess with things so far down. But that's just me :)

Again, I can definitely see how that could be useful, but maybe that's something that needs to be taken back to gnome/xfce/kde devs?
