Hello Fellow Fusionites,
Now that Compiz Fusion 0.5.2 has been released, there are of course official packages on your favourite Backports mirror :)
You need to ensure you have both "main/backports" (http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Policies/SoftwareMedia#.2Fmain.2Fbackports) and "contrib/backports" (http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Policies/SoftwareMedia#.2Fcontrib.2Fbackports) defined as sources.
If you need to locate your nearest mirror, you can use the Mirror Finder tool: http://club.mandriva.com/xwiki/bin/view/Downloads/MirrorFinder2
When you have all the media configured, you just need to install the package "compiz-fusion". This is really just a "metapackage" that pulls in the other required packages. Make sure you update your compiz to the 0.5.2 version found in main/backports or expect some odd results! You can also optionally install "compiz-fusion-plugins-extra", "emerald" and "emerald-themes" if you want.
Once installed you can activate it in one of two ways - either system wide, or per-user. The only difference is the file in which you put your configuration: for system wide use "/etc/sysconfig/compositing-wm" and for per-user use "~/.compositing-wm". Normally these files would be configured via a GUI, but too much has changed in Cooker for the GUI tools to be backported too, so for now you'll have to use your old friend vi/emacs/nano etc. to do the config :)
Here are the variables you should use:
COMPOSITING_WM_START=yes
COMPOSITING_WM=compiz-fusion
COMPOSITING_WINDOW_DECORATOR=emerald (optional)
That's it. Just log out and back in again and you'll be staring in wonderment at Compiz Fusion goodness!
If there are any problems please let me know. Please include your config as noted above and let me know if there are any likely errors in your ~/.xsession-errors file. The output from "rpm -qa | grep compiz" may also help ensure the expected versions of packages are installed (they should all be 0.5.2 currently).
Have Fun
