View Full Version : Logo Contest Final Elimination

imnotpc
January 2nd, 2007, 10:34 PM
All the "contestants" have had plenty of time to discuss and edit their entries and now it's time to freeze editing and begin the final round(s). A quick review of the contest rules:

1. The logo poll requires a majority of the votes cast to win.

2. If there is no majority, we will drop the entries with lowest non-zero vote count and any entries with zero votes, then take additional polls until one entry gets a majority.

3. Each poll will last for 3 days.

See the logos here: http://www.go-compiz.org/index.php?title=Contest

I have made a new version of the cube - it is like this:

http://mailforwho.googlepages.com/Shiny_Cube1.png

My monitor geometry is _all wrong_ so I have to kinda approximate aspect ratios - if it is wildly out can someone change it or tell me please!

I hope it is allowed to change at this late date - if not well, it looks like the cube is going out anyway :)

The differences are:
Shiny!
Actually square
Better shading
Glow is redish
Windecos are lifted off the surface of the cube and have shadow

'Source' is here:
http://mailforwho.googlepages.com/Compiz_Logo_shiny.svg

Just in case it was lost at the end of the last thread: is it a problem that the arrows logo is essentially the same as the unity 3d logo?

The cube logo looks great, but means nothing.

I voted for vdepizzol's excellent tango logo.

I just subscribed to vote for some1else logo.

It is really simple and so professional, and monochrome version can be great for T-shirts.

Maybe it lacks personality? After I looked at it more and more I think it has _his_own_ kind of personality, the message it can communicate to the community could be: "compiz would be even greater if it will be even less introusive" :)

Sorry, maybe this is really not the place for propoganda...

Bye,

Sorry for the FUD or possible flame war... but, what's mean the logo made by Some1else, It seems so... meaning-less... It's just an box (that looks like the box of Mandriva 2007 PowerPack :P) and with an arrow... this not reflects the current explosion that is the Compiz.

Just an opinion, btw, nice logo :)

First of all, please forgive my ugly english... then...

some1else's logo is the best documentated logo. If you want to understand the philosophy behind the logo you can easily find what you need HERE (http://forum.go-compiz.org/viewtopic.php?p=1839):

My judgment in favor of some1else's is not based on a simple preference on the basis of beauty. First of all his logo crearly symbolize the values behind compiz: not just "effects" but cleaniness, a desktop made to improve usability. The pointer shown on some1else's logo is a symbol which has been present for years on every desktop system, so it symbolizes the continuity with the past, not a revolution but an improvement.

Second point: some1else's logo is very recognizable, different from other red logos present in similar projects (i.e. Beryl) and not associable with other projects or firms (this is the problem in my opinion for KRZYzak's logo, which is similar to the ubuntu and other logos i.e.unity logo)

Third point: it can be used REALLY as a logo and not only as an icon. On the contrary vdepizzol's logo is mostly an icon designed for screens.

Fourth point: it's not associated with GNOME or KDE. Vdepizzol's logo on the contrary, has been clearly designed thinking at the gnome 2.x environment only (tango icons are mostly present in the GNOME environment)

Fifth reason: it looks great (http://marco.boneff.ch/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/compiz.png)on the top of my desktop's cube ;)

Hello, Raideiin

Tango Desktop project isn't a GNOME Project. It's a freedesktop.org project. Tango exists to help create a consistent graphical user interface experience for free and Open Source software.

My logo wasn't been clearly designed thinking at the gnome 2.x environment only-- as you said. My logo follow the standards for interoperability in all X Window System desktops.

Tango Desktop Project is doing an hard work to standardize (http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Fridays) the open-source user interface. I think all new logo would have to follow it guidelines.

I did some changes in color:

January 5th, 2007, 02:19 PM
I agree that the User Interface Logo looks really nice and is well designed. But I voted for the Tango Logo because I think it matches more the desktop environment and looks more like an icon. As vdepizzol pointed out a lot of applications switch to a Tango icon now and therefore I think Compiz should take the chance and also apply a Tango icon.

RYX
January 5th, 2007, 02:27 PM
I have to say that I not really agree with the outcome of this poll - the leaders are both unprofessional (and not only from my POV). The vdepizzol-logo is way too colored and inconsistent and contains way too much elements. The some1else-logo looks like a product-box with no further significance and is really boring ... I have to agree that KRZYzaK's logo is really close to the "unity"-logo, but looks far more professional than the alternatives ...

I don't want to be too critical, but I think compiz deserves more than what we currently have and David will most likely be shocked by the results. Even beryl has a better logo ... (So maybe it's better to keep the "splat", re-organize and give it another try).

Well, if someone could make some variations on the logo delphinen suggests, like in blue, at different sizes, maybe modify it a little and re-draw it following the tango icon guidelines, etc.

It would be nice, especially if someone produced a version that could be used with the current wiki skin. :D

The Tango Icon can easily be a Logo too..

Tango aint associated with any particular DE too, tango fits in every Opensource App whileas some1else doesnt fit in anywhere. It would surely do in probably OSX or another Environmet but clearly not the Linux desktop as of Today.

Plus sooner or later every Linux App will have a nice and shiny Tango Icon.
Linux is caring about consistency these days!

Also, if this was a true election there would be no more discussion allowed on this thread......

twigsby
January 5th, 2007, 09:03 PM
I've made a few mockups of how the logos (with the majority of votes so far) fair as icons. While I think the logos are both very beautiful, their use as icons isn't quite so appealing, at least not in their current form.

http://www.twigsby.com/tmp/compizlogotest.png
http://www.twigsby.com/tmp/compizlogotest2.png
http://www.twigsby.com/tmp/compizlogotest3.png

I think both work well up in the header, though the Interface logo looks a little strange facing the edge of the screen, but as icons the strange dimensions and perspectives really play against them.

Maybe the two logos that win can be given a few days to try out some further experimentation with regards to perspective, colour and icon counterparts?

dariof
January 5th, 2007, 10:22 PM
Yes, you're right but I think the problem could easily be solved at least by reverting some1else's logo and changing colors to vdepizzol's one (blue is better IMHO).

Anyway, for me "user interface" is more professional... I voted for it!

:?

His logo is fine.

The arrow "line" bit is stylistically totally different.

His box also has white borders in addition to that.

Now maybe his logo is inspired by that or something, but I do not believe he simply took that and copied it.

RYX
January 6th, 2007, 02:42 AM
It has far more similarities than differences - it is not unique and could be done in 5 minutes anyway. The "line"-bit looks even worse than in the original. (The price says all ...) I still say that it is disqualified (though I don't like the alternatives, either).

amgeex
January 6th, 2007, 03:22 AM
Haven't you at least considered that some1else's logo similarity with the one posted by vdepizzol is pure coincidence? I mean, isn't it great for a competing logo that the one he's losing against is just a copy from some other logo and thus disqualified? Getting people to agree on something is sooo difficult these days...

imnotpc
January 6th, 2007, 03:54 AM
If you look here (http://forum.go-compiz.org/viewtopic.php?p=1839) you can see the design history of some1else's logo. It may not be unique but it is his and I don't see any reason to disqualify it. Personally I prefer some of his variations on the first theme.

Sorry vdepizzol, can you please post the link of the page where you saw that logo?
I was checking that website, but browsing all the website and looking for that #6692 item made by Logotyper i found THIS
(http://www.templatemonster.com/category.php?type=0&tid=6692&search_words=+-+Any+-&from_=&to=&cat=-+Any+Category+-&style=0&author=84&x=0&y=0)

What's going on?

Alejandro Nova
January 7th, 2007, 05:32 AM
Take a look carefully to the screenshot and you'll notice that the font used while writing "DELIVERY, YOUR SLOGAN HERE" is Arial. "Logotyper" does not use Arial on any of his designs.

All issue is becoming stinky. Or some1else paid a great amount of money to "Logotyper" to withdraw its logo (I don't think it may be possible), or someone else is making a fake screenshot to force some1else's logo disqualification (I hope not), or my cold is getting worse and I need seriously to go to my bed (yes, I have a cold ...).

David said he was OK with some1else's logo as long as the majority of the community wanted it. I can't imagine any reason he would object to jimmac's changes.

I'm in talks with twigsby to update the go-compiz.org site with the new logo. We should use jimmac's logo version imo. Anyone has an objection?

Great work! I pull my hat ... :)

I'd still like to see a version with parallel lines in the lower area of the arrow ... but maybe I'll try that myself to see how it looks ;)

Jimmac, your version looks impressive! However, it differentiates from the base design in a few aspects. I think that should be sorted out by partly amending the base design, as well as setting clear rules as to how it should and shouldn't be applied to achieve consistency. That requires an establishment of a document that holds the visual identity guidelines.

I've sent a private message to amgeex the day I found out I won, with the desire for efforts to concentrate and not stray in different directions, but I got no reply, and since this seems to be the most relevant topic, I'll paste it here.

Personal message to amgeex
Hello there

I'm real happy I've been pronounced the winner!

I'd like to get in touch with all you guys in some collaborative environment (like a Campfire chat,
or a seperate forum section), to discuss the succession of my proposal.

Of course it's entirely up to you if you wish it to remain just a logo, but I'd suggest establishing
some sort of branding roadmap for Compiz.

Steps fulfilling the roadmap should deal with developing an identity from the logo I made, and it's visual applications (stationery, screen, website, icons) as well as the marketing aspect. Compiz objectives, capabilities and advantages should be communicated consistently so it remains the prime representative of XGL in *nix community.. Or at least as close as it gets

That way as more people choose to try XGL out, more of them will adopt Compiz and maybe contribute in one way or another.

I work in an advertising agency by day, so I think my contribution might be valuable in that area.

Please forward this message to the rest of the team. You can also reach me through compiz at some1else dot org.

My idea was to build the visual identity from the ground up in a coordinated effort. I've decided to start that effort with a thread called The Compiz Visual Identity (http://forum.go-compiz.org/viewtopic.php?t=474). Please continue reading there.
