View Full Version : Compiz Main Page

What's going on with the main page?
Things seem to keep getting moved around, put back in place, then moved around again. I wont say much about how the style around certain paragraphs has been changed, but honestly, I think the orange border looks aweful.
Also, why is there a huge block of text about the Beryl attack taking priority over all of the other, Compiz-related, information? Surely this is only going to confuse people coming to the site with little knowledge of the differences between the projects.
I realise a lot of things are still up in the air at the moment while Logos are decided upon and Documentation is getting priority, but couldn't things be a little less chaotic?

I'm inclined to agree.
As much as I sympathize towards the Beryl community for what happened, I don't think it's our job to be flashing it around on our front page.

I second you inclination, but like the orange border.

Unfortunately the Beryl issue does effect both communities. At the time I posted it we were still trying to determine if we had been cracked as well, and I wanted everyone to be aware of the situation. That's been ruled out now and it can be moved out of the "headline" position.

I gave it a shorter blurb.

I just announced the final round(s) of the logo contest so we can move that to the headline spot now.

Great. Looks good.
I didn't think "plights" was a word, but spell checker seems to be OK with it.

Aye.
Plights refers to struggles, tribulations, et al. :)
I also brought back the blue-box style, with some changed coloring.

See, I would have thought that plight was already plural as it generally refers to a group condition. I guess this is why (because) I didn't major in English. :)

Yeah - I'd agree I don't think plights is a word.
It is their plight, but isn't it all a little strong? sounds like someone lost a child, maybe we could save that word for national disasters etc.

To be fair, they lost several weeks of Wiki, Blog, and other related data.
Can you imagine what we'd be going through if the entire documentation section amgeex, myself, and others have been putting time into? I'd say plight is pretty accurate.
Oh and it IS a word:
Main Entry: 3plight
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English plight, plit danger, condition, in part from Old English pliht; in part from Anglo-French plit, pleit, pli condition, plight, literally, bending, fold -- more at PLAIT
: an unfortunate, difficult, or precarious situation
From Merriam-Webster's.

Yeah - I read it the wrong way around, I thought the forum was affected but everything else wasn't.
We do need to put things in perspective though, I do not agree at all with what happened, but normally these things are not as bad as they sound. I am sure they have plenty of backups. Damage like this is just a stupid irritation more than a complete disaster, especially for slow changing data like the blogs and wiki.

Actually it was the mysql data that was deleted. I think the site itself is OK. They unfortunately were in the process of acquiring another server and there were no backups for the mysql data. It appears the forum was on a different server which saved that from being wiped again.

I removed some of the specualtion on the main page. No need to fuel the flames and incite agrevation between the projects

Actually, I'm pretty sure the Beryl Team has confirmed it was a compiz user.
None of it was inciting flames - it was being honest. Whether or not it turns out to be a Compiz user, the teams on BOTH sides do frown upon this kind of behavior.

Im not disputing anything here but the burden of proof is strong. The negative consequences of prematurely pinning this on a Compiz user are substantial - I do not want to start anoth civil war between the two projects.
That is the premise of innocent until proven guilty remember.
When Beryl-project.org posts a notice on their front page confirming who the user was (with evidence) then we will do the same. Not before.
One again, I condem any sort of these actions, the Compiz project should also condem them, but this is not a "trial by media"

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/binary-log.html
Running the server with the binary log enabled makes performance about 1% slower. However, the benefits of the binary log for restore operations and in allowing you to set up replication generally outweigh this minor performance decrement.

I'll have to look into this some more. I do daily backups to a remote disk but anything in between would be lost. A days worth of data for me isn't critical, but losing nothing is better...

Theres nothing like accidentally typing a delete or update statement without the where clause, then being back up without the clients or boss noticing anything. You can even rerun the statements after the 'hiccup'.
You just blame it on caching or something if anyone notices. 'Well does it say all clients are female NOW?' :D
I love this business...

Sorry guys, my internet connection broke and I feel kinda phased out because all of this happened while i was disconnected. And well, about the main page, I guess once we have a new logo we will need to create a skin for it, or at least modify a bit the current one. I apologize for moving stuff around.
