Hi,
I just had an idea on how to make a good use of the widget layer. I haven't used it myself yet but this would be a use case for me.
I guess it would be possible to put (tomboy) notes on the widget layer. What if you would also be able to show relations between notes. So when you click on a link to open up a new note it shows it with a link. You can interact with these links (for example you would be able to close of a link). It would show directions and maybe you could even tag these links and show groups with different colours.
So on my start note I would have a work and a home to do list. I could open them both and they show to stickies with an arrow going from the 'start' note to the two others. Then if I add a to do item and make it into a new sticky to describe it it would open up with a link again.
I guess it needs some more working out, hope someone finds it useful.
PS It might be best described looking like some sort of 'mind map'.
