At present, it is possible to use Compiz as a drop-in replacement Window Manager for the following environments:
GNOME (replacing Metacity)[/*:d6607]
KDE (replacing KWin)[/*:d6607]
XFCE (replacing XFWM)[/*:d6607]
[url=http://opensolaris.org/os/community/desktop/communities/compiz/:d6607]OpenSolaris[/url:d6607][/*:m:d6607]
Some environments, however, blur the line between a Desktop Environment and a Window Manager. They are reliant upon their WM, so it is not possible to run Compiz as a replacement WM (since only one can run at a time; they cannot be "stacked"). Thus, it is not possible to run Compiz in the following DEs:
Openbox[/*:d6607]
Fluxbox[/*:d6607]
Enlightenment (16 or 17)[/*:d6607]
WindowMaker[/*:d6607]
... and most other environments[/*:d6607]
Additions to this list are welcome (via PM), provided that a reliable citation is included (eg. a link to some screenshots, an installation guide for Compiz on that DE, or package/download information).
