View Full Version : We are i18n ready

Hello Community

I am happy to announce that i18n infrastructure is ready and we can
now translate compiz-fusion plugins and ccsm.

http://l10n.compiz-fusion.org/ is up, so that you can check status
of translation in your language and download .pot directly from there if you are
starting with new translation.

We would be creating a team of translators, with one member per lingua
in charge of keeping translations up-to-date.

A special obby server has been set up so that translators can work
collaboratively at the same time on one document.

Download Gobby and join obby.opencompositing.org port 6523, password is cfteam.

Sign in your name in "i18n General" document, copy over
compiz-fusion-plugins.pot and ccsm.pot as yourlocale.po and
yourlocal-ccsm.po respectively and you and your team can work on them.

They will be committed periodically to the git tree or as and when
commit request is posted on l10n-General document on obby or on http://bugs.opencompositing.org.
Translators can also request any of the devs on #compiz-fusion-dev to commit their translations.

We would be giving git access to some Language Team members so that
they can check in and keep template and .po files updated on obby as
well as on git.

We now also have translator's lounge here: http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=3398

Thanks Onestone, Maniac and iXce for all the hard work setting everything up.

Suggestions, comments welcome.

Get local.

Guys we from the Greek forum want to translate Fusion in Greek!!!

Only gobby is needed???

cyberorg
July 9th, 2007, 11:52 AM
That too is optional, but it helps if more translators are working on it.

It is easy, just look how other translations are done.

They are on obby.opencompositing.org Cyberorg!
We made them there with gobby!!

It's the:
1. el.po->for the plugins
2. el-ccsm.po->for ccsm

So take them anytime you like they are finished! 8-)

I am out of town, be back after 20th, could you request any of the devs on #fusion-dev to commit it for you. Thanks.

I proudly announce you that Greek translation is commited today in Compiz-Fusion!! :D :D

I followed your advice cyberorg and asked Marex to commit the files and he did it at once!!! ;)

So the Greeks stroke again!!

If we want to call our Fusion "a big revolutionary project" we must have our work available in as many languages as we can!!

So Happy translating folks!! ;)

How to test the translations?
Compile and copy xx-ccsm.mo to /usr/locale/xx/LC_MESSAGES/ccsm.mo works but how about the other file (xx.po)?

cyberorg
July 20th, 2007, 06:45 PM
ccsm.mo gets installed and other xx.po gets integrated in pluginsxyz.xml.

To test the translations run:

[code:75ce9]LANG=xx.UTF-8 ccsm &[/code:75ce9]

Ok. But how can I integrate the translation in the XML file?

By the way, are you able to commit this translation?

Nope, compiz-core and core plugins translations are handled from fd.o, we can commit ccsm and compiz-fusion translation only.

Auto tool in the plugin-* takes care of merging translation, to manually merge run this:

intltool-merge -x -u /path/to/po/ plugin.xml.in plugin.xml

My question now is...

What if we see bad meanings and translation mistakes when we run CCSM...?
And we update the translation??? Can we recommit the updated files?? :?

Of course, that is why we have gobby, so that translators can keep improving the translations.

I have put up "Commit request" section in "i18n General" document where you can request commit of translations new/modified. Once it is committed it would be removed from the queue.

Long Live Rock 'n' Roll!!

Or Long Live Fusion 'n' Roll??;)

I just wanted to ask if we can have a mechanism to update our files in obby with the new strings to be translated??

Or if someone should take the responsibility to do that job periodically or when new stuff arrives?

Just for info for all the translators iXce updated our files today!!
Check out for #fuzzy strings and new untranslated ones!!:)

You can get the po from here:

You would need ccsm and i18n po files.

We will see how best we can work this out, till then translators just have to run this to update their translations (get new untranslated strings):

intltool-update xy.po

Not too hard is it? :)

Eeeh....
Where run it?? With gobby???

Eeeh....
Where run it?? With gobby???

First time:

git clone git://anongit.opencompositing.org/fusion/compizconfig/ccsm

git clone git://anongit.opencompositing.org/fusion/i18n

cd ccsm/po
intltool-update el.po
cd ../../i18n/po
intltool-update el.po

Next time:

cd ccsm/po
git pull
intltool-update el.po
cd ../../i18n/po
git pull
intltool-update el.po

You will get all the new strings in your po. el.po is used just for example, use <whateverisyoulocale>.po

If starting new translation:

intltool-update -p
cp <appname>.pot <youlocal>.po

Use your favorite po editor (kbabel/poedit) and add your translations.

Once you are done, you can either put them on obby (instructions somewhere on this thread) or email them to me or file a bug on bugs.opencompositing.org and attach it there.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you very much...

Just a request... Can you or someone else announce the arrival of new strings to update???

zox
August 19th, 2007, 03:01 PM
Sorry for not starting new thread. Just checking...

To make translation, one needs to substitute msgid with msgstr? Aka there are no hidden meanings inside msgstr.

And is it the same or similar system of translation like used in compiz?

Thanx,
zox

I am happy to announce the addition of http://l10n.compiz-fusion.org to our web infrastructure.

All the translators please check the status of your translations on that website, and also use .pot from there for translation.

New strings will automatically be added to your translation and will show up on the status page, so no need to run intltool-update xy manually.

You are encouraged to use l10n status page and help complete compiz-fusion translation in your language by joining your language team. We would be releasing compiz-fusion 0.6 along with compiz 0.6 in couple of weeks time and hopefully we would have all major languages coverd 100%.

New translators, please see the .po files in other languages to help you understand what you would require to do to translate.

Download .pot, use kbabel, poedit or your favorite translation editor to start localizing.

Ciao

Macedonian is a language, not a state. And while it's true that Macedonia and FYROM is not the same, the language Macedonian is spoken (according to wikipedia) in FYROM, Albania, Serbia, and Greece.

Also new translators please check the obby server before beginning the work, may be someone may have already started the work.

And yes, l10n doesn't list the countries, it lists the languages :)

I am facing some problems. This is regarding the sentence structure, while English uses a subject-verb-object rule,Bangla uses a Subject-object-verb rule. Therefore while translating something like Don't enable %s I have to put the variable string at the start, like %s enable Don't(%s কে সক্রিয় করো না)(It's just to show the order).I believe that will not make any problems.

But the real complications arise when there is a string with two or more variables. For instance "You are trying to use the feature <b>%s</b> which is provided by <b>%s</b>.\n""This plugin is currently disabled.\n""Do you wish to enable <b>%s</b> so the feature is available?", In this translation,I need to change the order of the variables, but as they are not identified separately,I don't think that will be possible. In some other program I've translated, the variables in such situations were identified separately like %s1,%s2 etc.Is it possible and pragmatic to implement it here also?If not,i'll have to leave them alone.

The sentence is simple: "You are using %1, which is provided in %2"
In English, you can reverse it like: "You need %2, which provides feature %1"

Is it really impossible to reverse it like that in Bangla?

Milo
August 29th, 2007, 01:37 PM
IIRC, if you want to invert the order of "%"s in a string you have to use a sintax like: "%1$s", "%2$s" and so on...

For example:
msgstr "there is %s of %s space"
msgid "of %2$s space there is %1$s"

You better check gettext manual about this, because I don't remember if it's a standard POSIX feature... or better ask the developers...

cyberorg
August 29th, 2007, 03:21 PM
<webustany@#fedora-l10n>

include <stdio.h>
int main(int argc, char **argv) {
printf("%2$s is greater than %1$s", 1, 3);
return 0;
}
$gcc -o test main.c
$./test
3 is greater than 1

So there you have it, this is how you reverse the order %2$s reverses %1$s

Could it be possible to have an announce about the next release that is going to exit, say 1 week before its release, so translators could finish their works and send them for upload? (in this way we could have some sort of time schedule...)

If there's already something like that, please excuse me... and maybe point me to the relevant information :D

Ich kann mehrere Sprachen. Wie funktioniert denn das Übersetzen ?? ZBsp für potugiesisch, Muß man in den Dateien .pot alles so reinschreiben wie es in Englisch daneben steht ? Das sollte am besten so, möglichst einfach, möglichst wenig bescheuert/kompliziert/formlos sein/gemacht werden. Und warum sind bei einigen Paketen keine .pot sondern nur .po Dateien vhd ? Beantworten, ich kann gleich loslegen :)

Yes, it is this thread, subscribe to it so you get email everytime someone posts here. I announced some time back that we just released 0.5.4 and are preparing for 0.6 release beginning of next month.

Work on .po files from the 'Stable' branch on our l10n website.

Always run 'msgfmt -cv xy.po' and fix any fatal errors before submitting your translations.

Keep checking http://l10n.compiz-fusion.org and status of your translation there too. Download the latest .po of your translation with new strings from there.

From what I understand form google translate, you want to know how translations work? It is quite simple, Download .pot, from your language page and just write below the english strings in your language.

For example:

msgid "Unfortunately, I do not understand German :("
msgstr "Leider verstehe ich nicht Deutsches: ("

BTW, thanks to Maniac our German developer, de.po is always 100% translated.

Good, now I editet everything in ccsm.pot . What I do now with it ??? Post it here ?

Either post it on http://bugs.opencompositing.org selecting i18n component, or put it on gobby as xy-ccsm.po and put the commit request on i18n General document.(see first post)

Make sure you fill in missing information in the header:

Eren has provided a patch that makes handling %s translations a bit easier:

This would be the way you would be translating multiple %s strings:

msgid "Set something in %(action)s for %(setting)s"
msgstr "dominum meum%(setting)s quae te %(action)s nem mor"

Cheers

Yes, with that patch, translating has became more flexible and easy.

%(foo)s is your variable that will be used in po files. You only need to put it into translated string at where your language requires easily. For example;

msgid ""
"Plugin <b>%(plugin_conflict)s</b> provides feature <b>%(feature)s</b> which is also provided by <b>%(plugin)s</b>"

You can use variables in everywhere independently. The Turkish translation of that sentence is;

msgstr ""
"Eklenti <b>%(plugin_conflict)s</b> <b>%(plugin)s</b> tarafından da sağlanan <b>%(feature)s</b> özelliğini destekliyor"

Happy hacking! ;)

I am getting this Error on my po file.

bn-ccsm.po:1:2: parse error
msgfmt: (null): warning: PO file header fuzzy
warning: older versions of msgfmt will give an error on this
msgfmt: found 1 fatal error

How can I fix it?and once it is fixed,I have to change the status of the file in gobby to committed,I assume. Is that it?

Edit:The error is fixed,Google's a beast :),BTW,Do I have to commit each time change is made in the file,or the file will be updated automatically?

Everybody see what's going on ... some language people try to 'monopolize' open source and put only them own translation in programs, passing over other people ones ...

... so it's the best that the package people - like me - fork that, throw out them translations, and make packages only with our own translations. :D

Hello Translators

Do you see some folks have already got a nice title 'Translator' with their forum name, if you have contributed translation and have not received that title, please send private message to wfarr, he would be happy to oblige.

1) On my site copaya.yi.org/tgz meanwhile have new packages of the snapshots of last night, which runs nice on my own computer ... :)

It includes a forked version of ccsm, where I throwed out the portuguese language file of before-yesterday, and put in my one, posted above , post #46.

On that day, I submitted my language file by bugzilla, which gave server error (see below) and mailed it after to some people of the project (see below). Without response.

You can put into your programs what you want. But: 1) then don't call people begging to make translations because of the iminent new release 2) open-source projects everybody can fork.

From my site, many people download .tgz packages.

I do not know of any "admin@knierim.org"

The translated files have to be submitted through http://bugs.opencompositing.org, or put up on obby server as mentioned here:

Could you point me to a bug number on our bugzilla?

Thanks

On the compiz web site, w.r.t. problems, or translation files *.po , is wroten one can send the files via bugzilla. Doing this, comes that error message what I copied above. When you dont know it -- then someone is pirating your site.

On the other hand, when really worry about translations, the project people could have copied my language file directly from the post above.

This is the bugzilla: http://bugs.opencompositing.org/

Please contact the other translators of your language, work with them in improving it and find our how they submit the translations.

It is not possible to keep track of translations on the internet, that is why we have bugzilla and obby.

Hello werner

One thing that you should mention is that it's Brazilian Portuguese, not just Portuguese.
Just to clarify some things.

And as cyberorg said, if bugs.opencompositing.org isn't working, you should try the gobby method. Is a lot more intuitive and allows for more colaboration between translators.

Actually admin@knierim.org is Justin Knierim, who owns the server on which bugzilla is. Maybe is he "pirating" his own server :>

The only I know is the following: At that time I read the request to make translations, for the next release, so that I tried to understand the system, AND TAKE CCSM AS A SUBROUTINE WHERE ACCORDING TO THAT INFORMATION AT THAT TIME NOBODY DID NOR ACTUALLY WAS DOING ANY TRANSLATION to pt, AND TRANSLATED IT imediately. Sending it via that bugzilla, gave that server error, visible in post #22 above, begging to comunicate to that knierim, what I did too, without gotting any response, as well to two other participantes of the compiz project too. Later I seed that my translation was ignored, but included that of someone else, made later.

This only shows, that the whole system don't work. When you want, improve it, or dont beg persons to make translations and later dont include them. To my opinion, one should make MOST EASY AND INFORMAL AS POSSIBLE such sistems. In Slackware, for example, the sistem is extremly easy and effective: one simply send an e-mail in any form to the man, and he reads/considers the problem.

In fact, I dont want to involve me in translations, as my normal work is programming/compiling/packing. But one time you called for translations and because of this, uncomplicated and imediately, I made that translation, I also include it. The packing people are in a stronger position than the language people; the users get/use what we pack; from my site, many people download .tgz packages. Thus I throwed out the other translation and put in my own earlier one.

cyberorg
September 10th, 2007, 02:40 PM
To be included, translations have to be submitted, by following any of the three processes mentioned on the first post:

1. http://bugs.opencompositing.org
2. obby server
3. request any developers on IRC freenode #compiz-fusion-dev

I am not sure how informal and easy we can make without chaos than that.

Someone who can commit it to git must get the translated .po files somehow, posting it anywhere does not get it included in the project :)

I don't know how to help you, thanks for your time and sorry for any inconvenience caused.

The ongoing problems could have been avoided, by have done the same with .po files which - by lack of better information - were posted in that forum ...

Post it somewhere else, perhaps dont go in the 'project' -- but it goes 'open', and goes in packages compiled by objectivity rather than by persone's cult

For the future, it's good to recognize, that contributions should make so easy and unformal as possible and to pick up them from ANY source. The best, also to offer 2 e-mail adresses where to send them when the translater want to submit them in that form

Hi Werner

I have committed pt_BR translation from obby server including your name as a translator in the po file. If you are serious about maintaining translations for you locale for this project, I request you to please use obby or bugzilla to submit the translations.

If you are not able to do that, I am sure someone would be happy to maintain pt_BR from our community.

Kind regards

I try to learn to use it, I hope that sistem dont give problems

Because, normally Im doing other things, like, programming, correct programs of other/making them working/packing etc. Of this I can spend some time for translations, if senseful, especially for such languages where have not so much translaters (f.ex. Wolof, Fulbe, Mandingo, Balante), but I dont want to spend more time to correct bugs of bugzilla etc (inclusive because my opinion is that submitting all kinds of improvements, corrections etc. should be most informal possible). I try to use that system, but when it gives problems, I send language files anyhow else, or, when this gives problems, not more at all
