Why change from phpBB3 to vBulletin???

......I had the forums all setup, and afterwards, we got a few registered users, maybe 10 posts at most. And then I complained to iXce that vB just wasn't going to cut it. He's always been one to lean on both sides of the fence, and IMO, always reserves his vote, and doesn't truely come out and say anything (Don't take this as bad criticism iXce, it's a good quality for a lot of things)...

...So we backed up vB, and put up phpBB3 again. But the database had been removed. So once more, I setup the forums. And mind you, setting up the forums is not easy. You have to create the forums, change the settings, setup permissions, setup groups. So the forums were created, and they've been great so far. We closed up the beryl forums, and posted the announcement to use opencompositing.org....

...The forums have grown extremely fast. Faster than compiz.org or any other forum I've been a part of, aside from Gentoo's as there's probably more posts there than compiz.org and opencompositing.org combined, and then some. And then what we thought was finished with was brought up again....

...It's been decided now to close down the opencompositing.org forums once we've got compiz-fusion.org setup. The plan is to setup vB, and to build the Compiz Fusion theme for it. Then prepare to merge the compiz.org forums, and opencompositing.org forums. Once the prep work is done, the forum admins will be importing opencompositing.org with the compiz.org forum data into the new vB setup. Then the forums will be opened.....
- nesl247 out!

A don't understand.... vB is CLOSE!!!... phpBB is OPEN... so... why???
I know that you (admins) must to have some reasons... but... why not to listen to the community...

The opinions below are my own and aren't necessarily the Compiz Team's stance on the matter:

vBulletin is the software that, we feel, best suits the needs of the community for a host of reasons that I won't bore anyone with. However, I will provide a brief summary of reasons why I personally feel we have opted to use vBulletin:

While vBulletin _is_ proprietary software, with the purchase of a license, we have full access to the entirety of the source code. This assuages any doubts about "the evils of proprietary software" coming into your home and kidnapping your dog or somesuch.[/*:m:13787]
vBulletin has a long-standing reputation (which I can attest to) of not just being extremely secure (we've all seen spambots in our day), but staying very much on-top of patching new flaws as they are found.[/*:m:13787]
vBulletin offers a wide set of features and abilities that other softwares do not offer that will not only make our job easier, but provide a better user-experience for everyone involved.[/*:m:13787]

Many people, both in the Mailing List in the past, and on other threads about the web, have often expressed concerns any time proprietary software comes within 10 feet of an Open Source project. I don't believe this should be the way we act. It is my belief that both "closed source" and "open source" software have their places in the world. There are many instances even now where one can see how "closed source" and "open source" software are interacting on a daily basis! For example, many distributions employ vBulletin for their own forums, such as Ubuntu and Fedora. Even up to a year ago, some proprietary software tools were even used to manage the Linux kernel (yes - that means Linus Torvalds used non-free software). I wholeheartedly embrace the FLOSS movement in many ways - if I didn't, I wouldn't be using Linux or helping out with a variety of FLOSS projects. But, I don't see the point in supporting the senseless FUD that seems to be bandied about the OSS community regarding proprietary software. Using proprietary software won't give you cancer - again, it has its place in the world just as FLOSS software does.

What it boils down to, in my mind, is one simple question: which software will best suit the user's needs? I use Linux not because it's the software with the licensing I prefer, or because it complements my own ideologies about softwares, but because it best suits my needs as a user. I view vBulletin for this project in much the same vein.

A lot of things have been said in the past that simply weren't true. Saying things like "vBulletin won't cut it" is not only patently false, but reflects a lack of actual knowledge about the matter. There are many large sites with far larger forums than we will ever attain who use vBulletin because it also suits their needs. If vBulletin can "cut it" for Something Awful, Ubuntu Forums, and thousands of other absolutely huge sites, it can "cut it" for this project.
