Well, there was a time when I used to be able to click on the other desktop on my gnome panel's Workspace switcher and it automatically would rotate the cube, but now it doesn't work. I tried messing around with gconf settings but couldn't get it to work. Anyone got any ideas? :?

Make sure that the following options in /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/ are set this way:
number_of_desktops -> 1
hsize -> number ob cubefaces you want i.e. 4
vsize -> 1 (not sure if this is needed, should only be important when you use plane plugin)
This is due to current changes in compiz that allow real multiple workspaces (instead of the large desktop (or viewport) feature before, whose horizontal size and vertical size is set by hsize and vsize). The number of workspaces is set by number_of_desktops. This way if you have i.e. set number_of_desktops to 4 and hsize to 4 you will effectively have 4 cubes summing up to 16 viewports. There is currently no animation effect for changing a workspace. The animation for changing a viewport is the well known rotate effect.
Hope this helps...

Ok, this works, but I think it has a bug or something. Suppose I restore metacity and then I run compiz again. Now, if I do that, when I start compiz again the Workspace switcher won't rotate the cube automatically, even if all is set right. I have to go into gconf, change the desktop number to '2' or something other than '1', press enter, then set it back to '1' and press enter. After doing this steps the Workspace switcher works again. What gives? :shock:

I have just installed Compiz 0.5.0 and I have the exact same problem.
Is there a solution for this?

Try to set /apps/metacity/general/num_workspaces to 1 ;)
