seriously peoples, this project is a group of plugins, applications, etc that extend the window manager
why do we need a special name ??
why not compiz-extra ??
it means no confusion, no lame joinage name, no need for this bs poetry about the meaning of words and their greater effect on the users subconcious mind, no need to abuse the fame of the beryl project (though if there is still and overwhelming need for a shiny name, then beryl-comipz-plugins is still a good suggestion).......
I mean there is a very small chance of there ever being consensuson a special name.....

Might be a choice. But how do we represent something called compiz in a logo? Well, personally, you know that for meaning reasons and so on I don't like the name compiz at all. But if this is a way out than be it. I'm a Beryl user and I'm not so angry at leaving the Beryl name if we have to. Just as long as something moves on.

why do we need a logo too ??
has anyone ever heard of an extra's package having a logo, a catchphrase, a marketing effort?
lol

We're not using compiz-extra, or anything with compiz or beryl in the name. It's been decided already, so live with it. If this becomes a flamewar, I'll be locking this topic.

I see a reason behind the opinion that we need all of this. Compiz is only the stable core and won't be mentioned that often - as the extras seem to be used more widely. We have a systray-icon and a manager for it and as people start to use it more and more this product will become very well-known throughout all the OSS community.
What would we do then? We have neither a nice name, nor a logo nor a slogan or the like. So I think that we will need all of it - as we probably represent something that will be shipped onboard with 50% of all distributions yet to be released.

Hey, don't get me wrong. Nothing like what you are saying looks like having been decided, tell me if I'm wrong. A lot of people are proposing things like compiz CE or Compiz Fusion or something else. There is compiz in this names. If there will be not in the final one, I'll be very happy. No war :D

At least to my knowledge compiz will not be in the name. Things like coral are winning, so even if something with compiz is the name was proposed, it's not likely to win.

I still think we should just call it compcomm - Composite Community. I honestly think it has more of a ring to it than the other names that have been recommended...

I agree with calling it compcomm, actually I agree with any naming decision because it would mean an end to this endless naming discussion, I really think there is no need to a name, if this is a merge than it should keep the upstream name....
What I don't agree with is the amount of time wasted in this kind of discussions. We should all be discussing new features and ways to implement them....

I agree on naming the community behind the project compcomm, but the project itself should be named different, because, in my opinion, it is not the compositing community which describes the content of the package. We therefore could also name it "bleeding edge compositing window manager + addons" - perfect description for what we distribute.
People are getting weary upon this endless discussion. Who had decided to call the fork "Beryl" back then? I'm interested in the process of finding the name back then.

the devs came up with the beryl name
it was all going farely well, then we had a rather flamey thread in the forum, then one day there was this post that said, "we've forked into beryl", a little while later we lost the forum to the hard drive crash and everything started to change, the forum was never the same.
at the time i was angry with them, not only for the fork, but for choosing the name of a community driven project without the input of that community, though now i'm starting to see why :D
maybe if the devs came up with 5 or so names they definitely liked created a new poll for everyone, then whatever is chosen is final, and someone actually makes that executive decision like Quinn made for beryl, this whole thing might actually end....
