Well folks we have a new nvidia driver 100.14.09. I have highlighted
the "RenderAccel support for subpixel antialiased fonts" because some
users have reported problems with this while using a composite desktop.

If this driver version retains all of the stability improvements available in 100.14.06 (beta) and doesn't introduce any new bugs, I'm going to like this update a lot. ^_^

Ever since I switched from 1.0-9755 to 100.14.06, I have stopped seeing the following problems:
black window bug[/*:m:62e7b]
instability in Texture From Pixmap mode (as opposed to Copy mode on Beryl)[/*:m:62e7b]
blank screen or freeze when switching to and from virtual consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F1 et al.)[/*:m:62e7b]
blank screen or freeze when switching between multiple X sessions[/*:m:62e7b]
screen corruption on Ctrl+Alt+Backspace[/*:m:62e7b]
random, very long delay waking up from DPMS Off state[/*:m:62e7b]
Let's hope that all of that stays gone with 100.14.09!

Edit: Also, 100.14.09 is not a beta driver. It's a release version.

Yep you are correct it's not beta.
I just tried this driver and here is what i found.

It locks up the computer when i use compiz-icon but it works fine with compiz-manager.

It's slower "FPS" in X but a little faster in compcomm.

When i log out to KDM i get artifacts on the screen and i lose keyboard input.

I didn't need to use "Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"" in xorg.conf.
"i noticed this with the beta-06 as well"

I don't have any problems logging out to KDM or logging back in. The grey overlay that paints over the screen when the End Session dialogue shows up does look a bit glitchy, but everything is fine otherwise.

Exactly where are you losing keyboard input? Does it help if you stop Compiz before logging out? Start Compiz manually after logging in instead of auto-starting it? If you're auto-starting Compiz, how are you auto-starting it?

It happens whether i manually start it or auto. But if your not seeing this
problem and, i saw the same problem with beta-06, i am starting to think
it is an error in the homebrew ebuild i am using. I will try it again, once
there is an official ebuild or, one written by someone who knows what
they are doing...LOL

i still get black windows after 10 openoffice writer windows.....

Is that a challenge? :D *OOo Writer window spam!*

Whoo! That was fun. Yes, exactly ten OOo Writer windows. How uncanny. Oh, well, better luck next version, then. XD I don't usually have more than 16 windows open at the same time, anyway. Sorry if this bothers other people, though...

At least [url=http://www.opencompositing.org/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=522&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=black+windows:0951e]djdoo's guide to fixing the black windows bug[/url:0951e] will still help people. Maybe. Actually, I haven't tried it. You don't suppose nVidia actually broke it even worse in this version, do you?

Did someone say challenge. I can open about 100 windows till i see the BWB......LOL

Well i haven't tried 100 windows but i think i can do it.
I did 10 firefox with 25 tabs each running a flash movie
and, 10 konqueror's with 10 tabs each and, then played
a movie full screen on another viewport, before i saw
the BWB in a menu.

I don't think tabs qualify as windows, though. With a compositing window manager, every window continues to be rendered in the background even when they're not currently visible, so they occupy video memory. But multiple tabs in the same window causes the window itself to be responsible for deciding what content to render into the window, so content from background tabs isn't constantly being rendered and isn't consuming video memory. Right...?

Still, I am impressed by how far you went to answer to this challenge.

i got 7 fullscreen firefox windows before BWB

or 6 fullscreen firefox windows, 5 dialog boxes (asking if i want to close tabs as well after pressing close on all the firefox windows) and either a another firefox window smaller than 1023(width)x663(height) or a gedit window smaller than 883x767

lol :D

I hadn't thought about it that way but, I think you are absolutely correct.
So i tried opening individual windows till i got tired.....LOL
You can see the total in the taskbar. I never got to see the BWB.
Notice the blur plugin effect on none active windows.

with blur and antialsing and ANIS. filtering turned off, i still have the 10 openoffice writer threshold...

That's not bad at all. I am sure you don't have the memory i have so that
i think is good that you can do that.

yeah, my card is PCI-E with 256 MB RAM (and gig ram in the computer)

what you have?

Read my signature....

lol

i will conveniently blame the fact that my glasses broke this morning (the arm got bent quite a bit and the lense popped out, and it's one of those glasses that only has half the frame and so i can't put it back in myself....) and i'm wearing the old ones, as the reason i didn't see that :P :D

O.O

Jupiter, that screenshot is insane! It blows away the paltry imitation that I call window spamming. XD It almost looks like the Windows redraw bug where a modal dialog causes the rest of the screen to stop updating, so you could drag it around and it'd leave trails of itself all over, creating the illusion of thousands of windows...

I don't ever use anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering. I can handle a little jaggedness that I don't even notice when I'm looking at a moving image. And I tend to spring for the lowest-end of the current generation of graphic cards when I upgrade, so...

Well i would have to say that if i was to go for a low end card.
I would go for the best low end at the lowest price = $100 range

About ten firefox if nothing else is running. *mumble* *mumble*... didn't improve. BUT, switching consoles finally works - and because that's something I use quite often I finally went back from Fluxbox to you guys here ;-).

switching consoles (that is the <control><Alt>F* thing right ?? ) screws me over if i have compiz running :(....the first few times switching works fine but after a while when i return to my console where i have compiz running it is a black screen, the mouse can be moved, but nothing else is responsive and i have to press the special little restart button on the computer.....

Console switching used to be very broken for me. If I had run Compiz (or Beryl in Texture From Pixmap mode) even once since I last booted, then there would be a very high probability that I wouldn't be able to switch to a virtual console. When I press Ctrl+Alt+F1, my screen would go blank and stay blank, or sometimes the monitor's power light would blink like there's no signal coming from the video card at all. Sometimes, I manage to switch back to my X console, but sometimes, I have no choice but to reboot. :|

With the new drivers, though, I honestly haven't seen it happen even once.

Despite these being "unified" drivers for all platforms and supported graphics hardware, there seems to be quite a bit of inconsistency between how they work on different computers... I have access to another computer whose hardware configuration is nearly identical to this one (only the processor (slightly faster, same manufacturer) and hard drive (slightly larger, same manufacturer) are different), and that one never had the blank-console glitch, even with the old drivers.

I can't install the new driver, I always get some mismatch error :(

I'm in ubuntu feisty BTW...
Can anyone help?
