Hi, I've been working on creating a desktop environment which is easy to use (suitable for beginner users) and for visually impaired users for my local Blind centre. I've created a video of work done so far which you might be interested in viewing. I'm currently using Beryl (because I can't figure out how to install without a package  ) with zoom and negative accessibility options on Ubuntu 7.04. I'll be installing the system on Friday for a week or so to get some feedback from the visually impaired users.

Ooh, putting beryl to charitable use. Good for you! :)

I don't think CompComm has an equivalent to Beryl's Input-enabled Zoom plugin just yet, so Beryl may be a better choice for now anyway.

I've successfully run Beryl on an 8-year old, Pentium III computer with a GeForce FX 5200 (which is probably even weaker than an integrated graphic chip in newer computers). Animations, the transparent cube, and other fanciness didn't induce too much lag, so I think the comparatively lightweight set up in the video will do well even on hardware that's a touch less than decent.

Wow, pretty cool, nice work you have there, and very helpful I guess, good luck installing it, and keep the good work...

Will do, I'm delivering the computer to the local blind centre today to let them have a play with it.

I'll give it a go on my second computer this weekend. I should have lots of feedback from blind/partially sighted users re: Zoom and filters in a week or so, will feedback to the forum when I can.
