This is a bug in the Nvidia drivers (as of now from 9755 to 9631 for legacy and up for others) that may be fixed in the future. This is because memory management of driver does not work properly, therefore it is especially occurring with video cards that have not enough video memory. When you've used it all up with open windows, newly opened windows are left black. Reloading the window manager or resizing windows smaller or minimize other opened windows will make the currently-opened windows visible, but doesn't solve the problem. Some have had success with one of the following, though usually at the expense of a lower frame rate:

* compiz --replace --indirect-rendering
* compiz --replace --loose-binding

Note: Many of these options can be toggled by right clicking on the fusion-icon system tray icon and then clicking on "Compiz Options."

Also check out the post here for optimal settings: nvidia forum discussion on the issue

If you use the Blur or Transparent Cube plugin turning it off is beneficial since it leaves you with more video memory for your windows.

Also check your shared video RAM in BIOS settings first, some default settings are below capacity.

Edit: Driver 9755 (latest at the time of this writing) exhibits this bug with a GeForce 6150LE that has 256MB of (Shared) video ram operating at 1280x1024x24bpp.

Sorry to say this but just to mention some things...

--indirect-rendering doesn't work well combined with --loose-binding in most of the cases...

Also some times --indirect-rendering may not be enough...

And when you use --indirect-rendering frame rate doesn't drop...It is increased a bit for 3d apps. Just like Beryl was behaving in the past...

Also why FAQ?? You could have wrote KNOWN ISSUE or INFO! I don't see any FAQ around...

And my complain is why so little?? You could have give much much more... There is a lot of experience with that...

And what's that nvidia forum discussion?? You mean nvnews? Cause the thread was closed there 3 months ago...
All the updated info is here!

PS: Pardon me my friend if I my writing style was intense but I go mad when hear about the nvidia forums and they to help our users with this and general setup... And especially from you Jup...:(
