View Full Version : Division of Responsibility

We've had some brief discussions regarding creating documentation and web design teams. I've given this a little thought and I have a few ideas to throw out for discussion. We've reached the point where we've (I've) been here long enough to get a feel for who is serious about contributing to the site.
The difficulty is: While I can see you are a serious contributors, I know very little about you guys and what skills you have (and are willing) to offer to the site. On top of that the "job description" may change based on upcoming decisions (example: I could be in charge of administering a Joomla or Exponent site but never a wiki).
With these issues in mind I'd like to list a few areas of responsibility and suggest some individuals for those duties. I'm not trying to assign anybody or tell you what to do. I'm simply trying to provide a reference point to start the process. Let's discuss this and organize ourselves into an effective team.
Documentation - amgeex - You seem comfortable working with either a wiki or a CMS and have expressed an interest in this.
Forum Administrator - zootreeves - No need to change this in my opinion.
Site Design - RYX - Experienced in all aspects of building a site.
Graphic Design - twigsby - Your designs speak for themselves.
Troubleshooter -mikedee - You are so valuable as a coder and on the forums I don't think we should give you any additional responsibilities. Having you as a resource is enough.
Toilet Plunger - imnotpc - While I have some skill in a lot of areas, I'm not qualified to be the lead in any one area. What I can do is focus on the big picture. When I see things that are getting clogged up I'll push them through. I see myself doing whatever I can to support you guys and make the project successful. I can also act as liason to the mailing list and David so they are kept up to date with what we are doing without being distracted by our day to day issues.
There are a few others that are on the forums regularly but I don't know what their interest is regarding the site: nzjrs, iznogood, gandalfn, cyberorg and Sorcerer come to mind. Speak up if you want to work on the site.

You can put me down as a Lurker. There may be others, less visible than me, who would be more suited to take the lead the role.

Ok, I take the responsibility given upon me with honor. :D (lol) Yeah, I'll be over the wiki and checking the forums if ya need me. :D

First to say - thanks for bringing the discussion to a productive state. I like the idea of getting some details about the skills of everyone here.
To introduce myself: I am 27 years old, have an unfinished (due to lack of money) degree in Multimedia Arts and work as a freelancer for a few years now. Most of my time I create websites using Flash and PHP for other individuals (like DJs or lawyers). I work on Linux only (for about 6 yrs now) and in my freetime I try to learn more and more about coding on Linux. My secret dream is creating a better, hardware-accelerated drawing-app for Linux (gimp is ok, but has its limitations ...), but its far beyond my capabilites ... (Edit: No, I don't think this is the election to the "Miss World" :D ...)
Shortly said, I would gladly accept any kind of responsibility. Sorry for boring you with my personal details ... :D
:)

Maybe we should have an introduce yourself thread were everyone can but their skills, interests etc.. I'm happy continuing to manage to the forums. Do you want me to give everyone special names in the forum? e.g. amgeex = "wiki expert" or whatever

Sounds good to me :)
Ill try to explain some of the new features in git and what they mean for the ordinary user. There are a few changes today and yesterday which add some usability and fix some old bugs.

I can deal with packaging if you need some.
I think besides the compiz-extra git repository and bugzilla becomes now essential

Bugzilla will be useful for extra bugs, there is a xorg bugtracker for anything in core. Its hard to find and place bugs so we should try to replicate bugs in core here before someone can report it with as much information as possible on the official tracker.
Git is really essential. David seems to be clearing through his backlog slowly but steadily so hopefully we will have one soon.
BTW anyone can help by spreading the word that compiz is still alive, there seems to be a lot of misinformation on some of the distro specific forums.

OK, well this discussion went a lot better than I expected. I was sure we were going to spend days throwing tomatoes at each other <grin>. I'll go ahead and wind up this thread with a brief summary of our roles and responsibilities:
Name: imnotpc
Title: Commodore Plunger
Responsibilities: Provide support and resources to the team leaders, looking for things that may be overlooked or require the coordination of different resources. When we hit a work flow bottleneck or vapor lock, apply the plunger to break through and keep things moving. Act as liaison to the mailing list and David to keep them up to date on our activities.
Name: RYX
Title: Site Designer
Responsibilities: Develop and maintain the site coordinating the logo(s), theme, and components into an attractive, functional site.
Name: zootreeves
Title: Forum Administrator
Responsibilities: Manage all things related to the forum.
Name: amgeex
Title: Wiki Master
Responsibilities: Maintain the wiki and manage the documentation.
Name: mikedee
Title: Troubleshooter
Responsibilities: Provide technical support to the other team members and developers as needed.
Name: twigsby
Title: Graphic Designer
Responsibilities: Work with RYX to provide graphic and site design support.
Name: watkin5
Title: Lurker
Responsibilities: No specific responsibilities. Just lurk around the site.
Name: gandalfn
Title: Compiz Packager
Responsibilities: Bundle the developers' work into packages for use by other developers and the public.
These aren't set in stone and if you'd like to change your title and/or responsibilities please speak up. It's not a high priority to me, but some point in the future it would be nice to put this on the site somewhere so we can give recognition to those that contribute and have taken on responsibility.

Great summary of our titles and responsibilities. I agree that we should put this list on the go-compiz site, maybe under Community Credits or Community Team, something like that. Let me know, and I'll do it asap. :D

How does "Our Team" sound?
amgeex

I think is adequate, but I'd like to hear what mikedee, RYX, twigsby and the others have to say.

Not that I'm officially sanctioned in any way, I'd be glad to help where I can.
I'm a forums dude. Experience working on several large fora. Also an Ubuntu user and fairly knowledgeable.

Welcome aboard ButteBlues. I'm going to 'port' the list to its own 'Our team' page on the wiki. 8)
UPDATE: The 'port' has been completed, check it out at http://www.go-compiz.org/index.php?title=Our_Team

Im happy to do any wiki type stuff. Im not much of a graphic designer but have quite a bit of experience formatting mediawiki things. If you want some templates or things setup (like how I did the plugins page for example) then ping me.

And David ?
Interesting question. David indicated here http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/compiz/2006-November/000922.html that he didn't want to be too involved with the website and prefered someone else manage it. David (and other devs) read and post on the mailing list which is why I post important threads there. So regarding site management, I don't feel comfortable assigning him a title or responsibility without his direct input.
But you did make me think of something. My intent was to organize responsibilities on the site only, but since we now have a page talking about "Our Team" we really need to include the devs there also. Maybe we could look at a page format with a few categories such as Development Team, Site Design, Forum, Wiki, Other Contributors and list names and titles within each category. I would probably only use the Responsibility section for team leaders or when someone takes on specific responsibilities. What's everyone think?

Oh ok !
In my mind it was a "General Compiz Team", so my question. David is the main developer...
But if it's only the Site Team, that makes sens.
Anyway, I'm just a lurker here, happy user of this great software, so... ;)

Couldn't agree more. I was a former Beryl user, but after hit after hit after hit (removal of dbus, etc.), I just got fed up and went with the project that, imo, had a far better development roadmap and organization... and developers. :p

Well I'm sure David won't disappoint you. The jury is still out on the rest of us.

David hasn't and won't.
I'm equally faithful in the rest of you.

I really like that Tango site.

Looks very nice, the tango! site. I will work on it as soon as I get some free time. We would need pictures of ourselves though... :P
