not everyone makes use of four desktops. some use more, some use fewer. i, for one, use three. wouldn't it be good if instead of being constrained to a cube in compiz there could be other prisms? such as a triangular prism -- three sides plus top and bottom. pentagonal one for five screens. so on.
also, i realise support for multiple monitors isn't fantastic yet, but when eventually people with dual or triple screens (like me! but compiz only works for me on a single screen at the moment) can easily get compiz running, the cube/prism would be better spinning vertically for them -- one desktop above the other rather than side to side. if this could be an option that would be fantastic.

Isn't this already available? You can certainly change the number of desktops. I'm not sure what happens to the cube effect (or at least have forgotten), but it presumably becomes a prism.

If you use Gnome Compiz Manager and change the number of desktops, the cube automatically shrinks or expands, morphing into new figures. I've tested it up to 8 sides, its quite funny when you rotate it.

Change this to 3

I think there were some recent changes which fixed this it never used to work, looks cool with it set to 2, just a reversible piece of paper!

oh, that's very cool. i wasn't able to go down to one screen for long enough to find out how to do that!
how about the other idea? i shouldn't think it'd be too hard to implement the desktops being one above the other at all, and imagine your huge long prism rolling over on a triple display...

As far as I know the multi desktop support is in cube already, you can already have 2 cubes on top of each other with different contents.
For us single screen users we are just waiting for a cool cube-to-cube animation and we will have multi cubes nicely. Pagers and taskbars may need to be tweaked but they should be ok.

This option may be helpful to you

i don't think that's quite what i'm getting at. if i understand you correctly, that'd be two separate desktops, each with its own cube and its own virtual desktops.
with my multi monitor setup, it's all the same desktop, and so it'd all be one long cube. you'd rotate it all at once, and since it's long and relatively short, it'd be better rotating up and down rather than left and right.
