Have you guys seen this:
http://enterpriselinuxlog.blogs.techtar ... s-drivers/ (http://enterpriselinuxlog.blogs.techtarget.com/2007/05/09/amd-will-deliver-open-graphics-drivers/)

I won't believe it until I see the open *3D* drivers though. (Only open 2D won't cut it)

I also read that AMD is actually redesigning/rewriting all ATI opengl drivers:

I think this is great news for all involved. AMD came out of nowhere with the release of the original Athlon and gave Intel a kick in the pants (and a wakeup call). I think their purchase of ATI and the GPU integration they are working on will do the same thing to nVidia. In fact AMD still uses nVidia chips for many of their laptops and they are working with nVidia on the same integration. Since the Opteron became a force in the datacenter they've been paying attention to Linux compatibility. Hopefully this is a sign that will continue.

I get the feeling these new drivers will only support the new HD cards and upwards.

Current I'm running beryl using ATI on Ubuntu with the latest driver 8.37.6. I have acceleration, 3D work I think but wasn't able ti have aiglx yet. I'm sure ATI will allow aiglx in the next or later release. ATI AMD better not ignore linux users or else they will face loosing a lot of their value customer's.
