does the wallpaper plugin in compiz-extra-0.3.4.0 work?
i've tried with a 768x1024 png, but just get the blank background i've got set in kde.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

It does work but it is a bit tempremental...

You need to make sure that you have the gconf schema installed and then make sure that there are 4 images listed in the /apps/compiz/plugins/wallpaper/screen0/options/images option.

Once you have done that, load the wallpaper plugin and hopefully the images will show on the background. You may need to move wallpaper up or down to get it to work properly.

The important thing is that there are the same number of images in the option as there are cube faces.

You seem to have killed your normal desktop or you wouldnt have black backgrounds.

BTW the black background is actually an image and it is actually working. The image it loads by default is /usr/share/compiz/background.png which is a 1x1 black image.
