ok then, as i suggested at the beginning of this forum, can we have a new layout similar to the one used by ubuntuforums ?? (i'm referring to their front page where it is broken into groups)
it's so much easier to choose the particular forum you want when it's presented to you in that way...
and ryx said he could do something like that in php....
thnx :D

Hmm. They have tonnes of categories under each heading... I wonder if the CompComm forums would become overcluttered if we had things that finely divided?
I do think theirs is a good model, though. Many (if not most) users go there for support, so naturally the first forums listed address exactly that need.
Contrast this with our forums, where one must look at the tiny list of subforums under CompComm Users to find "Installing Compiz" and "Installing CompComm". And, that doesn't cover all the scenarios where a user may need support. Also, what exactly does "CompComm Q&A" bring to mind? I'm not really sure what it's for; who asks the Q's and who gives the A's? Is it a FAQ section, like on the old Beryl forums? Does it offer support for problematic behaviour, or does it only cover the most common issues?
Some people may also fail to figure out that they should post in the subforums instead of the top-level ones, and be confused because the list of subforums is placed at the bottom of the top-level page (as opposed to at the top).
Yes, you're right; it would help if we had a more end-user-friendly layout.
(By the way: when I first looked at this thread, I thought that by "layout" you meant "theme." I had no idea that you were referring to the organisation and ordering of the forums and categories. Just so you know. ;))
EDIT: The stray "Installing Beryl" subforum has been dealt with.
