I would like to try it too. The Kicker fake transparency is just that - fake, but KDE4 will have real transparency. Just can't wait to see it released.

I applied the patch from the Gentoo Linux xeffects overlay, but it didn't work...

In Mandriva 2007 Spring with Beryl I use "Set Window Attribs..." and the "Window opacity" flag, to get a transparent kicker. To me it's true transparency. I can see moving windows behind it and stuff.

e.g.
[code:bbe4d]w:dock:75[/code:bbe4d]

I use it with a black kicker background and it looks really nice IMO.

The Compiz Fusion equivalent of the above can be found in ccsm->General Options->Opacity Settings. Add a matching rule for [code:935ef]type=dock[/code:935ef] and pair it with the opacity value you'd like to use.

Making the whole panel translucent is slightly underwhelming if you have pale icons and pale-coloured text to begin with, though...

But as mentioned above, KDE4 will fix things. :D Qt4 allows just about every element on the screen to have an opacity value, so even things like individual buttons, not to mention whole themes, can make use of translucency!
