Hello!
I had an idea for a plugin or maybe an extension to the group plugin..
don't if this has been presented before... if so u can ignore =D
here's my idea:
u can group windows to have horizontal tabs... where one window is the main window.. and others are attached to it.
Windows that are attached can hide behind the main window.
take a look at pictures:
gimp windows are attached ( layers window is attached to main window )

there could also be a "detach" button.
When click on "hide" button the window hides behind the main window...
and the "hide" button turns in a "show" button

with that in mind you could group all kinds of window.. such as
gedit behind firefox, or gaim behind firefox or both...
or whatever..
so what you guys think???

Take a look at group with tabs, it does something along this line.
Personally, I don't see the need to hide windows behind eachother when you can have as many viewports you want, but that's just me :)

Well, he's saying "maybe an extension to the group plugin"...
Good point Kristian, but some people, like me, prefers to have most things on one viewport... probably something to do with too much MS... ;)
Anyway, I like the idea. Would probably be a little easier to keep track of the windows than the current grouping.

I know that's what he was writing, I read it.
And group with tabs is exactly that; an extension to the group plugin.
So what exactly is he missing, except a wish to display the tab bar in a diffrent way, perhaps? That's something I can relate to, but is there anything beyond that?

... how? The OP doesn't take the group with tabs plugin into account at all, so I'm curious.

Hey, didn't mean anything wrong... And you're of course right, I haven't used the group with tab, and probably not the OP either?. Sorry, didn't know that existed...
And no, as far as I understood, there's nothing beyond that...
Do you know if this will be available when compiz/compcomm/whatever is released?

Probably will, it is allready in the premerge branch. Exists for both Beryl and Compiz, in other words.

Ok, then I understand your request :)
I've never really felt the tab bar was "just right", but I've never had any decent suggestions on how to improve it, though I've spoken to the group with tab devs a little bit about it in the past.
If you formulate your idea based on improving the existing suggestion, I'll make sure to pass it along to the right people (as they aren't known for following forums too closely), but to be honest, I wouldn't blame them for not starting this just now, they've spent a lot of time on group and group with tabs.
But I like your idea and I'll make a mental note about it even though I'm not the person who'd implement it, as I'd never use tabs :)

Well, maniac103 did want another way to tab windows and this sounds cool.
So you mean you click on the window that is tabbed and it comes out like a drawer so like
root window-->Subwindow>Subwindow>subwindow
and as you click on a sub window it comes out while the root window stays there right?
