as the title implies: i was on #beryl-dev a few days ago and we came up with a cool idea for a plugin. if all windows and whatnow was rendered as a 3d movie, with a red and blue shift, to either side.
how trippy would this be? i think it would be cool to turn on with a hot key, and then put on your glasses you got from Spy Kids 3D or Scoobydoos Craptastic Adventure in Acidland or whatever.
someone in #beryl-dev said it may be relatively easy to program from the negative plugin.
what does everyone think?

Please post feature requests in the features and ideas section.
That being said, does any video cards today actually supply stereo buffers in a sane way? This is what stereo buffers are for, but in general, I think this is a pretty pointless feature that will never actually be used beyond showing it off once or twice to your friends.
But again: Wrong place to post ideas.

The same could be said for firepaint, water effects and most of the animations?
Isn't showing off one of the many plus points to compiz/beryl/compcomm?

I haven't tried this, since I gave my shutter glasses to my younger brother, but I believe that this is a driver-level thing. At least, in the nVidia driver, it definitely is. All of the GeForce cards should support shutter glasses, but the feature needs to be turned on in the device driver. If you turn it on, all GL visuals should be rendered such that you can see them in 3D with the glasses. I'm not sure how well this will play with everything else, but it seems worth a whack.
Since I'm going to be see my brother this week, I'll tell him to find my shutter glasses.

This may be of interest here: [url=http://forum.compiz.org/viewtopic.php?t=1559:c062a]Compiz 3D anaglyph support[/url:c062a] ... It is a start of realizing the idea of an anaglyph-plugin.

Why not just extend colorfilters plugin?

I don't know what the colorfilters-plugin does, but the 3d-anaglyphs require some special way of drawing the windows (e.g. all windows are drawn twice, with offset and using special blending "tricks") and from the sound of the name it could be that the colorfilters are not capable of doing that (I may be wrong here).
I think it makes sense to have such a feature in a separate plugin just because many people may not even want to install it - it causes a very weird optic if you use it without (or with self-built) 3d glasses for longer than 10 minutes ...

In a sense impractical because of the glasses but how about a permanent "glasses material" layer 2 inches from your screen. You basically have a 3D monitor, no glasses required. Plus the material is cheap anyway.

This does not appear viable to me. Could you, please, explain better your idea (maybe some schema would help)?
