Hey,
This GUI script setup did a fine job on my system! There were bumps though.
Since I had installed all the extra stuff previously, such as opensuse-xgl-settings, aquamarine, etc, I did a YaST Software Management trash of all things compiz and beryl instead of just doing the rpm erase command line approach you instructed on the blog. I of course left xgl, xgl-hardware-list, libwnck, and whatever else from the X11:/XGL repo that didn't look like specifically Compiz/Beryl, like poppler, as I think other programs I have use that.
That uninstall also removed by dependency the gnome-compiz-preferences, aquamarine stuff, emerald stuff, just about everything I had been using with Beryl.
The first bump in the install was needing to restart the computer after installing the downloaded YaST mega installer program as otherwise that main program would error out saying that another process was using the YaST Software Management features. After a bunch of errors, abort clicking, don't try again responses, the program reported it had installed everything correctly but the only thing it actually had installed was the Cyberorg repository and the keys.
After rebooting however, I went back to your site in Kaffeine and this time the program was allowed to access the installing resources. I unchecked the repo as it had already installed that, but left the check in "Keep the repo active when finished."
It installed everything. The second bump happened when the last thing it was trying to install, the actual installer script program with the meta package "all" in the title, just stayed on the screen for 20 minutes after everything had been installed. I needed to ctrl-alt-esc skull and bones the thing to get it to close. As soon as I did that the installer reported a successful setup and allowed me to click finish and end things.
I needed to apply xgl in Yast, System, etc/sysconfig editor, Desktop, Display Manager, DISPLAY_MANAGER_X_SERVER and reboot. (I have a Radeon x850PRO with the latest fglrx installed.)
Once up I had the standard default Compiz running and once running ccp as per your instructions I lost the Window Decorations, cube and other things. Most windows also opened with the bottom right off the screen and no way to drag it all in. But I managed to open the ccp settings manager. I turned most of the stuff on but only some of it took effect right away. I needed to restart the computer and run ccp and the settings manager again to have all the stuff actually start to work.
Once doing that and rebooting again I noticed that KDE automatically would start ccp and the settings I had made at login. That's very nice. I have no idea why, as I don't think there's any autostart script with this stuff but it's nice that KDE somehow just starts it all up by itself.
The regular Compiz, old or this version, since installing the git XGL on the X11:/XGL repo that is updated from the SuSE oss cvs one, will not restart the computer when using the KDE restart from the menu. It only leaves me with a terminal login prompt. I must login as root and use the reboot command. In the past if I had switched to Beryl this problem disappeared. Now, with Compconn, once I have the ccp running things it also does away with this problem. But if I just have only the standard Compiz checked in the settings manager, or turn off xgl in YaST, then the problem returns. So at the reboot after switching xgl back to xorg or just using default Compiz I need to login as root at the terminal and tell it to reboot. Using the original Xgl from oss this bug never happens. But with the xgl update, only using the Beryl or new OpenCompositing with some plugins applied will let me restart the computer directly from the GUI.
I had made a bug report on that, was replied to that xgl hadn't changed (but of course it has since there are a lot of changes listed in the YaST description) and it had gone away when I used Beryl, so I had ended the bug report.
What I am missing now is that mouse to the left (or right, if you set it that way) corner to get the window selection screen to let me see and select from all the open windows. It's there with only the standard Compiz checked in the settings, but goes away once I turn the rest of the stuff on. Could you tell me which plugin does that and what I check in settings to turn that back on?
I am also missing any access to window decorations. Only the default thin light blue decorator is used. I tried going in and installing the aquamarine and emerald stuff but YaST wouldn't do it without installing the older gnome compiz/beryl stuff along with it. That stuff appears to only be in the X11:/XGL repo so must be tied to the older gnome/kde compiz/beryl software. Will you be adding the decorators and themes to the cyberorg repo? I noticed that someone posted here that he had installed the new git versions but I don't see myself manually doing that type of thing. I'm still mostly a gui point and click kind of user! I see that metacity is still installed but without that beryl manager program I don't know how to apply the window decorators in KDE. It will be nice if they can be installed into the ccp settings manager and if I can once again choose between aquamarine (using the KDE Control Center) or Emerald using the metacity types of decorators accessed through the ccp manager like the old system tray Beryl right click menu provided.
Also missing is the ability to drag a window into another desktop. I must drag it partially in, then move the cube into that desktop and Alt/drag the rest of the window over. How would I turn that feature on?
Several questions, I know. I wanted to report here on how the install script went so you could be made aware of the bumps in my experience with it. But I also just included my full experience as I figured it would be pointless to divide it up into several posts in different sections. This way you get one full report on the setup and use of compconn from one user.
I'm hoping that folks will respond to my queries on how to turn on some of the functions I want without worrying about which thread the questions appear.

I just pointed someone in another forum over to your blog. He had installed it from git and was not getting it to work in OpenSuSE 10.2. Hopefully he'll get it right with your instructions.
It's nice that KDE remembers everything on reboot. I don't even have to reapply stuff like I used to have to with beryl (restart beryl, restart window decorator). Don't know if it'll work as well once we have Emerald and Aquamarine but so far there are no problems anymore with everything working on reboot.
Is this a function of this particular install script, or would the appropriate autostart items also be made if just adding your repo to YaST and installing the same items?
Heh, I got the Scale plugin on and so now have the window chooser working. I still haven't figured out how to move the windows over to the next desktop but as I play I suppose I'll find that too. At least I can just move the mouse over to get the cube to move over. I'll get it!
I'm really looking forward to both Emerald and Aquamarine.
Hmm, newly opened windows sometimes appear off the screen so I need to move them into the desktop. Even Firefox opens with the titlebar up above the desktop. I guess this stuff will get sorted as well.
Still getting that KDE restart just closing the GUI and leaving me in a terminal, with a login and reboot or shutdown a now needed. Don't think that's a Compiz thing, but rather XGL. I hope they fix that.
Thanks for a great installation setup routine for us SuSE folks!
Edit - Woo hoo! Just installed Emerald, works great! It doesn't run at startup like the rest of it, but it's easy enough to do compiz --replace ccp & emerald --replace &.
Is that the correct way to start it, or is there a way to get it to start at bootup along with the rest of ccp's settings? I added the Emerald Theme Manager to the Suse KDE Menu's favorites (had to put it into the search box to find it).
Hmm, when I restart with Emerald running the system restarts normally. With just the default window manager, that terminal shows up instead. Interesting. Aguamarine also fixed that when I was running the old Beryl.
Redoing my system shortly with an NVidia 6600GT. I suppose things will work nicely without XGL? I'll find out! Gotta go through a whole Vista setup first. Grrrr.
I'll also start posting seperate question threads if they're not related to SuSE ccp setup. Sorry to put it all in here.

I am going back to the old "beryl" because of these points:
there is no icon i can click to change the settings
i cant get windows to another workplace
in csm-settings there is no description for the "animation speed" cases
"splash" isnt working
cant change transparency of kde-menu
there is no vidcap plugin
windows sometimes appear above y
etc.
still very alpha !

You can get windows to move over to the next desktop by partially dragging it then rotating the cube, then dragging it the rest of the way. Not elegant yet, but possible.
Edit - I turned on the shift-ctrl-alt with left and right arrow keyboard setting in the cube and that moves the active window along with flipping the cube.
No icon, but ccs-settings & opens the control panel and a search for Emerald showed the Emerald Settings Manager which I used, then added to the favorites menu with a simple right click. Emerald and the themes are now on the Cyberorg repo. Install them then do compiz --replace ccp & emerald --replace &.
Then just open the Emerald manager and apply what you want. So far, I have to do that if I reboot as just the default Gnome decorator is there, but at least the ccs-settings appear automatically without running that all the time.
The rest are missing or bugs, yeah, but overall its nice! I suspect fixes will come faster than you think and this is the program that is being worked on now. I wouldn't go back. I just move the window around if it opens in weird places. C'mon, you know they'll fix that.
Edit - Oh! I fixed it. I just needed to enable the Place Windows plugin.
He, he. Fire minimize and maximize is neat! I never tried that with Beryl.

hey CyberOrg since you didn't update the compcomm packages i decided to compile them myself, GLX_ext... you no the rest is missing. :?
HOW DO YOU COMPILE IT :?:
EDIT: Also can you give the list of needed packages and parameters to build on suse to franzrogar for his makeccc script?

I would love to update the packages but updating will break the transparent cube, the last working compiz-git with all compcomm plugins is in the repository below.
Get the compiz-git*.src.rpm from http://software.opensuse.org/download/home:/cyberorg/ and replace the source tarball with newer git checkout and follow the directions in the .spec files.
You can also check out kristian's build script from gitweb.opencompositing.org.
Checkout:
http://dev.beryl-project.org/~cyberorg/suse/31/31/ for how to install the latest packages available.
Have fun!

Yeah, heh, I like the decision not to update the packages if that would break stuff! Nice.
I look forward to new packages when you first know they'll work properly.
The only adjustment to my setup besides updating the libwynk from your repo and adding the emerald git stuff and themes also from your repo is changing the HWCursor to on in my xorg.conf. I'm using NVidia by itself without XGL or AIGLX. It's running great!
I can't use the Scale plugin, I guess because of the loading order of these versions, but substitute the alt-tab window switcher plugin for now. I hope we can get Scale back in the next version.
And because I'm using mostly default stuff in OpenSuSE 10.2 with just the Novell online updates and the Packman and Suser-Guru multimedia and update all in this list with newer versions with just the oss, non-oss, debug, CyberOrg, Packman and Guru repos, I have the not exactly conforming to the cube KDE pager in the KDE 3.5.5 that Novell supplies.
Going for stability this time, I figure that if I add all those Build Service repos I'll just be mixing stuff really being experimented with for the future OpenSuSE 10.3 with a system designed by OpenSuSE.org and Novell for the software shipped with it. I'm going to wait until they update things officially this time.
I've asked in another thread, but if you would? My CompComm is being started by itself from no script I can find, I think just by KDE restoring the previous session. Besides using the Grub menu to change the session to KDE default or using killall --compiz, is there an off switch for CompComm when used with just the NVidia GLX without XGL or AIGLX? Kwin is listed as the display manager in KDE Personal Settings with no way to change it (faded out drop-down). I guess kwin IS the display manager, but CompComm is just used along with it?
A bit confusing right now. Just looking for a nice on/off switch. When I had ATI, the YaST system, etc/sysconfig editor used to handle this by switching between xorg and xgl, but with NVidia I guess once you start CompComm and you have KDE always restoring previous session settings, we always have CompComm applied at startup. That's great, but I wonder about how to turn it off if desired.

May 29th, 2007, 04:52 AM
I guess I will have to use kde for few days then, will let you know the solution if I face the same problem and figure out how to solve it.
Scale should work fine, works for me here, check that you have it enabled in css-settings.
You can also try mv ~/.kde ~/.kde.backup to set everything to KDE defaults.
libwnck is required only if you are using gtk-window-decorator/gnome to get 'On Top' context menu option.
@some-guy will update the packages when heavy changes going on in compiz/compcomm settle down a bit, we will lose transparent cube as the last patches will not apply to restructured cube plugin unless someone writes new ones.

got it!
[code:cc994]LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libGL.so.1 compiz --indiret-rendering --replace ccp[/code:cc994]
you can also edit your .compiz-managerrc and add the indirect rendering part there ;)
then start with [code:cc994]LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libGL.so.1 compiz-manager[/code:cc994] :D :D :D :D :D :D
EDIT: you dont have to recompile compiz!

May 29th, 2007, 05:39 PM
Ah! Didn't know you were mostly testing stuff using Gnome. I install Gnome after the initial KDE OpenSuSE install, but this time I haven't even started with it since I've gotten so used to the KDE applications. I suppose that if I told Gnome to restore previous session I'd have the same result though.
I'm using Vista Black as an Emerald theme now (along with the Vista Black Firefox theme and associated extensions the author recommends) and have noticed that if I use the kde decorator that the whole Compiz along with the decorator is automatically applied at login, but if I use the Emerald decorator that I get no decoration and KDE starts up, applies Compiz, and I have no window decorator running. Easily enough, I just open a terminal and do emerald --replace &. Boom! I instantly get the decoration I had applied the last time I used the Emerald Manager.
I'm actually okay with this, with the exception of the intermittent bug where only sometimes if I restart or log out and in, I get that mixed up system tray icon problem. If I get that I do need to ctrl-alt-backspace, which usually restarts to the systray icons being where they're supposed to be again. That just about never has occurred on a cold computer startup.
Any time I have applied Scale in ccp-settings it has never been able to start the cube. The error, which I've seen others mentioning, comes up about other plugins needing to be applied before Scale. That, and/or resources using this are being used.
Yesterday I tried to apply a top of cube picture, the OpenSuSE one that used to be the Compiz default (just to start with something and see what happens).
No go, as within ccs-settings whenever I click the button that would let me type in the path to the picture file ccs-settings would crash with a segmentation fault error. There's no way to tell ccs-settings where the picture is as it always crashes if I hit that button. I tried just starting to type in the large box in that scripting section but the small window that opens never lets me complete a couple of words before erasing the line and starting over. That's weird.
I was going to try the one in the Compiz folder and the one downloaded from Kde-look to see if they were different but never got the chance to see either as ccs-settings won't let me type in the path.
So no picture on top. But I have applied a Skydome with no problems. In that section of ccs-settings, hitting the button that lets me type in the path to the picture does not crash ccs-settings. Go figure!
I sure don't want to lose the cube transparency, so I'll just wait until you update your versions on your repo. I wouldn't know how to do it any other way anyway.
Oh! Which plugin will give me the old Beryl 3D effect where the windows jump out with space between them when turning the cube? Right now they remain flat. I used to like that 3D effect.

Heh, heh okay. Nice to know I hadn't missed something I could turn on in the settings. I haven't met these fella's but I guess they are aware of what's in there or not in there compared to the older versions. I'm sure they check in and read some of this stuff when they get the chance as well.
I remember that we used to need to turn on the cube transparency but as I always did (when I figured out what to check in Beryl-Manager) it's nice that your version (or, the version you chose to include shall we say) just has it on.
It's been a while since KDE started up with messed up system tray icons, so perhaps it just needed a short settle in period to adjust to what it should do when ccp is started. It even survived my flurry of experimenting with different themes before I settled on mostly default stuff (guess I'm boring, eh?).
I have noticed that unlike when I was using the old Beryl with XGL and my old ATI card, my window decorations or CompComm itself hardly ever crashes. Both Emerald and kde-window-decorator seem to be sturdier than the old Aquamarine stuff.
Sometimes, depending upon what I'm doing like playing games or other intensive stuff, I noticed a system slowdown. But I attribute that to NVidia driver stuff more than CompComm. Sometimes it all comes back to full speed and other times I need to reboot. In any case it's loads better than what I had with ATI. It's crazy that it's similar hardware but NVidia just has provided more features, speed, and stability in the drivers than has ATI. I'm very happy I made the switch.

I see you did update all the files with newer versions the other day. I used YaST's update all in this list with newer available to get them. I really didn't notice a difference but thanks for the update.
I have gotten the KDE pager to work as it did before with Compiz/Beryl. I checked Desktop Preview as a plugin in ccs-settings. But KDE starts with the 2 desktop's (the default), with the pager bars extending to long bars when Compcomm applies itself after the normal KDE bootup, and I need to remove the pager, toggle KControl from 2 to 4 to 1, and then add the pager. Then it works perfectly with the window icons moving as I move them from one side of the cube to another.
I think using the Desktop Preview plugin helped, but I remember that Compiz/Beryl used to be able to set the KDE pager to 1 desktop with 4 sides automatically without me needing to remove, reset, and restore the pager to the taskbar.
Still, at least I've found a way to get normal pager use with Compcomm. Maybe someday the work-around won't be needed. Still on KDE 3.5.5 by the way. For all I know this would be working automatically if I updated to 3.5.7, but I haven't noticed any other problems so I'm staying with what I've got for now.

I have use Beryl, I preferred it than compiz (I think Beryl is superior ... but I'm just a user).
Now I have download compiz-git from cyberorg (thank you cyberorg) that I think is the new CompCompiz (fusion of Beryl+Compiz, right?).
I miss these features:
- SuperKaramba appear on just 1 virtual desktop (I would like in all virtual desktop as in Beryl), bug?
- Shawdowns on menus and panels looks white (don't look as shawdowns) I think this is a bug.
- Move windows accross virtual desktops with the mouse
- Start rotating the cube using just the mouse wheel (pressing it or rolling it).
- The preferences front-end of the lastest Beryl is better (easier and more complete)
- A "beryl-manager" icon
- I prefer aquamarine than kde-window-decorator
- resize windows plug-in in NORMAL MODE is so slowly in my system, Beryl has more faster modes.
But also there are thinks that has improved.
I also thinkt the fusion was the right way.
Now I see more of Compiz than Beryl, I would prefer the inverse, more of Beryl but with the stability of Compiz.
My system is:
openSUSE 10.2, ATI RADEON 9100 IGP, open radeon drivers (Mesa 6.5.3), xorg73, AIGLX.

I couldn't wait anymore! Gave in and installed this new Compiz-Fusion following your blog directions and setting up the xorg.conf for my NVidia card as in the FAQ. I only put AIGLX to off and Composite to on as I gathered from reading the FAQ that most of the other stuff is for older versions of xorg. I'm running the latest from the xorg 7.2 Build Service repo and the latest NVidia driver installed from their installer.
As I stated in a couple of other posts, I'm really enthused that it all works so much more completely than the older version using the ccs-settings did. That ccsm manager was easily setup and all the plugins I've tried are working great. I was even able to setup a cube cap and can move my active windows between sides with my mouse like the old Beryl days. Some of the newer plugins are cool as well.
My problem is that the post 100 series NVidia driver doesn't let me get out of the GUI without hitting the reset or power switch of the box. That, and the KDE pager and Multiple Desktops tab in KControl still needs to be reset on login even on KDE 3.5.7.
So both of those I guess are beyond the control of the Compiz-Fusion folks. Don't mind reseting the desktops and pager but that not being able to get out of the GUI is a real problem. On the nvnews forums there's a thread about that problem while running with compositing on that the post 100 series drivers have but the older 9755's don't. Well, I'm not experiencing the black window bug and my games and movies work great (even in mplayer) so I'd rather not backtrack to the older driver where those things didn't get along so well with a composite manager running.
Overall things are looking great. I just hope that NVidia can figure out how to fix this. Lots of folks want the improvements of the new drivers but still want to use Compiz Fusion or even the earlier Compiz and Beryl, where this problem also occurs.

Running Applications, System, Terminal, xterminal (or xterm) and doing su, your root password, and typing reboot works!
It opens another info window stating that the system is shutting down, and then the screen blackens except for a white windows where xterm was and a frozen busy KDE mouse pointer icon. But the system shuts down and reboots properly then without needing to hit the reset button.
Still cant do init 3 (get the black screen and the white window and all is frozen) but at least I can get the computer to restart, and I suppose shutdown -a now, properly.

I too would like to say a big thanks to CyberOrg for the wonderful job that he is doing.
I have installed the "latest" Compiz-Fusion and I am really impressed by it's progress, however it's a bit awkward for KDE users. I don't have any tray-icon and no window decoration. I activated the window decoration in ccsm but I still don't have any window deco.
Is Skydome possible?
CCSM also impresses me, it's really pretty and lucid though it doesn't seem to have as much options as BSM.
Overall it's moving on fine but I wish that the developers could make things a bit easier for the KDE world.
Thanks.

If you followed the directions on CyberOrg's blog page the YaST meta-package should have installed the kde stuff like the kde-window-decorator.
Once the window decorator plugin is activated in ccsm, you should just be able to do
kde-window-decorator --replace &
and the normal kde decoration as set in KControl (Personal Settings), window decorations should be drawn.
You can also run YaST Software Management and install the emerald git and emerald themes from the CyberOrg repo and run emerald --replace & to get emerald (might be emerald-decorator --replace &).
His instructions also tell you where to type in kde-window-decorator --replace in ccsm so that it will be the fallback decorator.

Maybe he's uploading new stuff so it's down for a bit. I'm on Debian now but I just tried those links just to be helpful, and you're right. They aren't connecting right now.
It'll get sorted so don't worry. :)
By the way, I found that I needed to logout and in after installing the meta-package I downloaded from there (right click the downloaded rpm and use Install with YaST). Then I used Konqueror and clicked on the installer link and the shiny new YaST meta package installer would run and be able to complete the Compiz installation. If I didn't reboot (or logout/in) in between it said another program was accessing the software management system and would only install the repo.

I am trying to push new packages, will take some time till all the mirrors are synced.
3D and Atlantis does not work as metadata xmls were not installed, will be fixing those shortly.
Please do not expect home:cyberorg repository to be 100% functional all the time, it is my test bench after all :)
I am unable to build kde-window-decorator on openSUSE 10.2 x86_64 as build system is not able to detect QTLIBS, if anyone uses it please download the .src.rpm and try building it locally and do let me know what is the issue.
@trustkill, please download the latest de.po from git and improve the translations, you can work on the translation on obby.
Have fun!

That's exactly what I did and the kde package is installed but it didn't work for me - no window decoration.
I also tried it by installing emerald but it still didn't work.
What i probably didn't do is type the -replace command in ccsm. Why is it so complicated?
Thanks you your help.

I just updated to the newest packages and it's now working, window-deco and all but i switched back to Beryl because CF is very unstable with my nVIdia card. I kept getting frozen screen where nothing works apart from the reset button.
It really looks promising but needs to get a lot more stable, at least as much as Beryl 0.2 is.

Alright folks, the test packages are updated now.
For everyone who had installed using metapackage, just run yast, select home:cyberorg installation repository and update all the package installed earlier.
For all who has not used metapackage, try this in shell as root:
[code:3bebb]zypper sa http://software.opensuse.org/download/home:/cyberorg/openSUSE_10.2 ctest (if using openSUSE 10.2)
zypper sa http://software.opensuse.org/download/home:/cyberorg/SUSE_Factory/ ctest (if using 10.3 Alpha/Betas or Factory)
zypper in compiz-git-all [/code:3bebb]
Start compiz as under as user NOT as root:
[code:3bebb]compiz --replace ccp&
compiz --replace you-window-decorator& (first time only)
ccsm&[/code:3bebb]
Change "Window Decoration -> Command to your decorator (gtk-window-decorator --replace, kde-window-decorator --replace (x86 only) or emerald --replace)
Bugs go in http://bugs.opencompositing.org/ , pro tester bug reports only, no noob reports please ;)
Discussion about the tips, suggestions, problems about the package here.
Enjoy!

Yes you can, you can also run konqueror in gnome, konqueror makes it very easy.
Follow the commandline way(zypper) of doing it you dont need konqueror then. Make sure you uninstall all compiz packages before installing compiz-git and compiz fusion.

I had a problem with the kde-window-deco crashing when I started a gtk application but I solved it by using emerald. i don't know if it's a bug.
CF is running nicely now but i don't like the latest expo plug-in, it's not as nice as the one in the version before. Will it be changed again?
How do I start the Aquarium. I activated the plug-in but I don't know which keys I need to start it :?
Another thing, I started CF by using the Konsole but now it starts automatically although there isn't any start script in the KDE autostart. Can somebody help me here please? I need to know where the autostart script is so that I can change it if necessary.
One great improvement is that I can change users as much as I want without getting a black (blank) screen. That isn't possible with Beryl.
I would like to say thanks to all the developers for their hard and dedicated work as they strive towards making CF the best and most beautiful 3D desktop on the planet ;)

Just for info... Cyberorg your July 11 Fusion packages are the best you ever made!! 8-)
Also please consider adding a package containing crdlb's Fusion-Icon!!
Cause starting Fusion with Fusion-Icon is far easier and usefull than the commands!
And gives you many options to tune like easy reach to ccsm, advanced options, and emerald theme manager! ;)
PS: Greek translation goes very well! Better than I thought in the beggining! It's a matter of few days to finish!!!

A little problem when trying to start compiz...

compiz (core) - Fatal: No composite extension

Am I missing something here? I would've thought that the composite extension was installed when I picked compiz-git-all in Yast..
Thanks for any help you can provide.

With the ATI proprietary driver you need to use XGL to get the desktop 3D going. I'm not aware whether the new Compiz Fusion programs work well with XGL or not.
You need to make sure you have the proprietary ATI driver (the one from the ATI website installed). Instructions are in a nice how-to on the OpenSUSE website.
You need to make sure that xgl, xgl-hardware-list, and libwynk (if that's spelled correctly?) are installed.
Then you make sure to follow the guide on CyberOrg's blog to install the new Compiz Fusion stuff and rpm -e (uninstall) the built in Compiz stuff. Gotta remove that or it will interfere.
You then go to YaST, System, etc/sysconfig editor. Click on desktop, then DISPLAY_MANAGER_XSERVER and change the value from xorg to xgl. If on KDE, go into KControl and in Desktop, Window Behavior you uncheck the "Use Transparency/Shadows." Then go to Appearence and Themes, Style and on the effects tab uncheck enable GUI effects and on the toolbar tab uncheck transparent toolbars when moving. All this is to disable the KDE composite stuff that definitely interferes with Compiz.
Then you restart the computer. You may find things really slow until you follow CyberOrg's instructions and activate Compiz. Once Compiz is turned on and you also enable the Window Decoration plugin in CCSM, things should be fine if Compiz Fusion gets along with XGL. You should fill in the default window decorator like he says. You will likely need the first time to run kde-window-decorator --replace & after you enable the Window Decorator plugin. On Shame's Debian repo CCSM already is setup with some nice default plugins turned on but, at least in the past when I used the CyborOrg repo on OpenSUSE, nothing was turned on until you put checks in the appropriate plugins to turn them on in CCSM. I don't know if it's still like that or not.
Once you turn on the plugins hopefully all will be fine for you. I ran both Compiz and Beryl on OpenSUSE with an ATI card and XGL and it worked nicely. The one caveat is you need to go into YaST, switch XGL back to Xorg, and restart the computer in order to play 3D games as XGL uses up the direct rendering so it's not available for gaming. MPlayer doesn't work well with XGL turned on either. You need to switch its video to xshm which doesn't resize the movies well. Kaffeine worked fine though.
NVidia is just better all around in Linux which is why I switched to it. But ATI isn't bad. Just not the greatest for 3D games. It runs the 3D desktop fine with XGL and Compiz or Beryl. Hopefully your results will be the same using the new Compiz Fusion.

Thanks for your reply Eck.
It seems that compiz-fusion doesn't like XGL. Actually, when I switch the DISPLAY_MANAGER_XSERVER value to Xgl and restart, first of all it doesn't log me in automatically and I'm dropped to a console login. When I "startx" in console, I'm left with a Desktop without borders (No Close, Minimize, etc) just the window.

Sorry it didn't work out with the XGL, Gnome, Compiz Fusion combo. I thought I saw some threads in the forum with folks mentioning their successful use of XGL and Compiz Fusion. Perhaps they were using Ubuntu and the trevino repositories. Not sure, but it looks to me like even though the files in the programs are the same from the assorted repos for the different distributions, each packager designs their own scripts for how the the features run.
Maybe you could try uninstalling all the Compiz Fusion stuff and reinstalling the original versions and just using Desktop Effects from the Gnome Control Center to run it. That starts XGL for you and a default setup of Compiz. Then you restart the computer and it all works. Can't update that past 0.3.6 as the 0.5 versions don't work the same way.
The uninstall of the Compiz stuff you did before installing the CyberOrg repo stuff removed the links that make the Desktop Effects control applet work. Not sure, but the original Compiz package from the OpenSUSE DVD I believe contains what Desktop Effects needs. Use the Build Service http://software.opensuse.org/download/X ... SUSE_10.2/ (http://software.opensuse.org/download/X11:/XGL/openSUSE_10.2/) to update it AFTER installing the original one from the DVD. I don't think the version you get if the Online Updates repo is enabled contains the whole package so you might need to disable the XGL repo, the Online Updates repo, and CyberOrg's repo and enable the DVD, oss, and non-oss repos to get the original to install. Then reenable the other ones (except CyberOrg) to update it to the latest old Compiz (0.3.6 I think).
That should work, but it also could be difficult to get original stuff to install once updates and their dependencies have been applied. COULD BORK THE SYSTEM!!! You may just want to do without this stuff until the dust has settled and a full featured official version is sent to the official repositories. Eye Candy is nice, but not if the installation corrupts your setup.

Yeah you're right Eck, I just might have to wait for an official release. I've tried the compiz stuff that comes installed with Opensuse (running on Radeon drivers) but I want more eye-candy! :D I guess I'll just have to be patient a little while longer..
Won't 10.3 have Compiz-Fusion? But I'd still have to try to make it work with ATI drivers :/
And I thought that ATI worked with Opensuse. Oh well.
Eck
July 14th, 2007, 05:55 AM
It does work (ATI) but suffers from no built in GLX and no AIGLX support, hence the need for using the Novell created XGL. And that (XGL) really is pretty good! The only pain in the neck was turning it off and rebooting to play 3D games. Actually, Compiz and Beryl are about the best things the ATI card provided for me. The 3D support for gaming from ATI drivers really isn't all that good as of yet. I couldn't play many of the games I play now with the NVidia card because of crappy frame rates with ATI.
And it's not OpenSUSE's fault. It's the ATI drivers, which Novell and the OpenSUSE developers have no control over.
I'm in the same boat as you are now! The latest Compiz Fusion updates required libc6>=2.6-1 but Debian Lenny (testing) only has 2.5-9+b1 in it. So I needed to purge all the Compiz Fusion, Compiz, Emerald, and the assorted stuff as I couldn't use it anyway. Leaving the older version on and the repo active makes updating the system too confusing so I figured I'll just wait until the dust clears and some repo for Debian Etch and Lenny is up. Shame's repo, that I was using, is really meant for Debian Sid (unstable). I could try his Beryl (and may if I get antsy, as it is more up to date and offers more plugins than the Beryl Project Repo offers for Debian), but it's probably safer all around to just wait for a while. None of this new stuff is really released yet and the older programs really aren't optimized to work with other newer library updates to our systems since their development stopped.
Price of progress is we sometimes need to wait for things to settle down and get released. I enjoyed the beta testing though!

I mean no offense by jumping in here. :)
I think CyberOrg is simply suggesting that although he welcomes your testing the new stuff, an easy way to get your 3D desktop going without hastling sometimes with bugs in non-released testing types of programs is to use the official repositories and the older programs for now.
http://software.opensuse.org/download/X ... SUSE_10.2/ (http://software.opensuse.org/download/X11:/XGL/OpenSUSE_10.2/)
If you have ATI you also install OpenSUSE XGL Settings from there and it'll magically install and let you configure things from a nice GUI. If you want the snapshots, install the stuff yourself and then you can still use OpenSUSE XGL Settings to configure and turn the stuff on.
If NVidia, you don't need OpenSUSE XGL Settings since you won't be using XGL. In that case you can just use the Beryl guide on the opensuse.org website and nvidia-xconfig --composite, etc, etc and then run beryl-manager (after following the guide and installing everything from that repo of course) and you're all set.
I'd like to include a recommendation here if you do use that repo and happen to use ATI and XGL. Do not update to the latest XGL version on that repo as that one was made to deal with a specific card's problems and actually is buggier than the version of XGL on the OpenSUSE DVD or the official oss repository. But do update libwnck and the rest of the stuff from that repo.
But, CyberOrg mean't no harm. He's not encouraging or discouraging testing the new stuff but is simply suggesting that for stability there's nothing wrong with going the official route. That's tested and proven and there are more GUI tools available to make it easier to configure and use.

I tried that git stuff, used Kristian's script to install but nothing.... I always get compilation errors in compiz compilation( Very strangely it sais that cannot find things I have installed and checked to have installed!)... :( :(
So please my friend when you get back home (or if you can earlier I would be happier!!) make a new ccs-settings package with the updated CCSM!!
Thanks in Advance...

rpm -qa | grep compiz
compiz-kde-0.5.1_git_9a137959-9.1
compiz-0.5.1_git_9a137959-9.1
When I try to start compiz w/ compiz --replace ccp &
I get an error that plugin ccp cannot be found..
If I try compiz --replace I get:
compiz --replace
compiz: Trying '/usr/$LIB/libIndirectGL.so.1'
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/$LIB/libIndirectGL.so.1' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
I installed from the openSuSE 10.2 repository.. Beryl still installed:

beryl-plugins-0.2-3.10
beryl-core-0.2-6.12
beryl-settings-0.2-5.10
Beryl is still running..

If you install compiz from X11:XGL repo, launch it with
[code:3d80b]compiz --replace glib gconf &[/code:3d80b]
ccp and compiz-fusion are not in that repo yet. To get rid of LD_PRELOAD message, install Mesa from xorg72 repository.

Do you / we / anyone know if that repo will be updated with compiz-fusion / ccp or will it be branched off to a new repo (would make sense if they just kept it there), and if they do, any idea when the repo will be updated?
I'll keep Beryl for now until I have more time to mess around with it, I may just install Compiz-Fusion from scratch or from your meta package.

@EclipseAgent:
At first here is my advice my friend...
I see that you have an nvidia card.... So please disable XGL!! It can cause you more troubles than help you with Composite on nvidia! Go to Yast->System->/etc/sysconfig... and set Xorg as your default server and reboot.
After that your system will reboot on Xorg and you will have normal Kwin window manager...
Then go here viewtopic.php?f=40&t=522 (http://forums.opencompositing.org/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=522) and tune your xorg.conf as the guide sais for every circumstance...
And after doing all that REMOVE any old Compiz packages aka 0.5.1 and rest, ALSO remove any emerald Beryl packages and then install the following packages from Cyberorg's repo(the link that google01103 gave you) by hand:
bcop-070721-12.1.i586.rpm
ccs-lib-070708-3.1.i586.rpm
ccs-python-070721-13.1.i586.rpm
ccs-settings-070708-2.1.i586.rpm
compiz-git-070708-18.1.i586.rpm

compiz-fusion-plugins-git-0707021-26.1.i586.rpm
compiz-fusion-plugins-git-devel-0707021-26.1.i586.rpm
These are the only ones you need!!
Then take fusion-icon by typing this into console:
git clone git://anongit.opencompositing.org/users ... usion-icon (git://anongit.opencompositing.org/users/crdlb/fusion-icon) && cd fusion-icon && sudo make install
And start Compiz-Fusion with Fusion-Icon!! Type fusion-icon and all ready!! :)

Also, not that I know, but maybe that NVidia card uses the older legacy drivers that didn't have the newer built in NVidia GLX optimizations or AIGLX (which they still don't.) So, without XGL he'd see that slow down if composite was turned on. He'd be using KDE software composite, which can really drag a system down to a crawl.
Now, if he didn't have the composite extension enabled and XGL actually made his system faster, then that's kind of a shock! XGL actually turns off the DRI (Direct Rendering) for anything except the composite manager (Beryl, Compiz, whatever) so his games shouldn't even work with XGL on. Weird.
djdoo
July 22nd, 2007, 09:38 PM
@Eck:
XGL maybe a bit faster but if you configure correctly your xorg.conf and maybe Nv_Reg driver options you can get equal or even better performance without XGL!!
The main problem with XGL is what you actually wrote about 3D applications generally!!
Cause as you also wrote DRI is disabled and Bye Bye 3D apps!!! :(
Also EclipseAgent's card is supported by the normal drivers not legacy ones...I read the nvidia readme and saw his model in the list.
But even if someone has 9639 legacy driver it would work excellent with the proper xorg.conf's setup(See my guide! ;) )
Only legacy 71xx doesn't support Composite... :(

Aww, maybe he's putting the updates together and testing as we speak! I remember your asking him about including the latest ccsm.
He did say he'd be back on the 20th, but who knows how long it takes to put this stuff together? I'm sure he hasn't forgotten. I think I read that he designs a lot of this stuff, with the rest of the motley crue. (Aren't they a great band?) He likely hangs his hat in a lot of things. I was using his repos, well, I guess the whole time I used OpenSUSE as he also fills up the normal X11://xgl Build Service repo, and my patience was usually rewarded with more cool desktop 3D updates and fixes.
But I understand. I too want things ready yesterday. I too must keep remembering not to pester, like, "are we there yet, are we there yet?"

Yeah,
rpm -q --changelog compiz-git | less
rpm -q --changelog compiz-fusion-plugins-git | less
rpm -q --changelog ccs-settings | less
But only major changes end up there, for every tiny details you can head here:

Hello all,
Just a question...I'm unable to get my Emerald window decorator to function. When using the console under "root" and enabling the compiz --replace& command then... "emerald", I get a functioning emerald windows manager but without any features other than rotating cube and standard background. However, when starting the console under "user" then... no window manager, however compiz functions with all the bells and whistles BUT without my Emerald window decorator!
Could someone please go over the steps involved to start the process from "compiz --replace&" (i.e. under root or user) and exactly where in ccsm to indicate which window manager to use if I want emerald to default as my main decorator.
I'm using the 100 series nvidia drivers.
Thanks to everyone who is involved in this great project. I've been using compiz from its earliest days and Beryl also with much success until now, so any feedback would be most appreciated.
Thanks again everyone!!

Take fusion-icon by typing this into console:
git clone git://anongit.opencompositing.org/users ... usion-icon && cd fusion-icon && sudo make install
It will solve all these problems!!! Run it by making a link to it on your desktop!! The original .bin is under /usr/bin dir.
And if no emerald started... Right click on icon->Select Window Decorator->Emerald
If already selected click Reload Window Manager and it will be OK! ;)

Thank you djdoo for your quick reply.
Yassus! (I hope that is spelled correctly :) I have started the icon, which reminds me of the Berly icon somewhat, and when I try to start emerald and the window manager, again fusion runs wonderfully, however still no manager.
I will try and revert back to the old nvidia 9 series drivers and try it with them. I am using an Asus A8js laptop with nvidia Go 7700 card which is quite powerful, so its not a matter of the card I don't think.
I will try today's last Cyberorg rpms and see what happens.
I will post my results asap.

Maybe yo tried this yet, but I managed to solve this same problem with this two little changes.
First:
Open CCSM, go to Windows Decoration (it should be enabled) and write [code:72cc1]emerald --replace[/code:72cc1] in Command line.
And second:
Open /home/your_user/.compizconfig/Default.ini and find a gruop called decoration. Chek the value of as_command.
It should look like:
[code:72cc1][decoration]
as_shadow_color = #3878cf40
as_mipmap = true
as_command = emerald --replace
as_shadow_opacity = 0.680000
as_shadow_radius = 5.500000[/code:72cc1].
Hope it helps. Sorry if text does not totally match, Im spanish.

It is not likely that widget or other plugins which are outside compiz or compiz-fusion tree will get packaged as they are not well maintained or does not have integration infrastructure like translation built into them.
As for screenlets, I am not interested in packaging them, may be someone else with build service account may want to take that on.

been awhile but since you've got Beryl working your graphics should be set up ok. Start with this http://dev.beryl-project.org/~cyberorg/ ... test-ride/ (http://dev.beryl-project.org/~cyberorg/suse/38/want-to-take-compiz-fusion-for-a-test-ride/), the actual repositories are here http://software.opensuse.org/download/h ... .2/x86_64/ (http://software.opensuse.org/download/home:/cyberorg/openSUSE_10.2/x86_64/)
What you also want is to dl and compile fusion-icon which is similar to the Beryl settings tray applet, it's in git so see:

Cyborg:
Today's rpm's no longer see/use my existing ~/compizconfig/Config.ini. And there seems to be some other 'issues' like:
- windows previews is not displaying title
- hide all windows can not be toggled with a screen edge
- ring switcher does not disply title
- ring switcher show emblem is window minimized
Has the locale of the config file changed? Yesterday's rpm's were not showing this behavior (yes I understand this is all alpha/beta)
thanks,

Play around with settings, you'll figure out what you are missing.
Check under ~/.config/compiz/compizconfig/
Yup, it is all alpha, so don't update so often if you like your system stable and way you configured it, also wait for an announcement which might contain hints about what has changed and how to workaround it ;)

Copied my stuff form ~/.compiz/compizconfig/ to ~/.config/compiz/compizconfig/ and all is well again - but logically the new name is more confusing (my opinion)

ok... what is libwnck-1.so-18 or whatever... and why do i need it? :p
just trying to get on the latest and greatest version of compiz-git
oh, and is there a command to force it to screen 0? in beryl i could force it to either screen 0 or screen 1, but in compiz the option is "--only-current-screen" - so if screen 1 loads up first, it starts on the wrong screen sometimes... meaning i can't auto-start it.

wonder how i can get emerald to work again.

the suse factory repo didn't work for me (suse 10.3 alpha 5 / nvidia) because of a newer libwnck package/requirement. i attempted it, and forced at least one item... but it broke emerald heh... and gnome lol, so i completely reinstalled gnome and the original libwnck and got back to a default install.
i started over with your suse 10.2 repo (which i was using previously anyway) and now all is good with the world.
everything seems to be working now, no complaints. the grouping/tabbing is more stable than before, but over time if you keep tabbing/un-tabbing, one of the windows acts a little goofy. no biggie, i only use it when i'm showing off ;)
great work, as always!
there are a few things though, not all are specific to your packages really:
in ccs general options, what is the "terminal command line" option used for? compiz loading? or? the popup hint offers no insight.
is there a way to force compiz to run only on one specific screen? i always have to manually run it from my main screen with "--only-current-screen". with beryl i could run "beryl --screen 0" and it would always force itself to screen 0. i could load beryl when kde started because it always went to screen 0. i will try with compiz, but my fear is that sometimes it will end up on screen 1.
my next question is related to the fusion-icon app... i would love to use it, but every time i launch it it runs compiz for all screens which has always been extremely unstable for my system. any help here would be appreciated.
thanks,

er, ignore the fusion-icon app question (above)... in libfusionicon.py i changed:
[code:28df9]compiz_command = [compiz, '--replace', '--sm-disable', '--ignore-desktop-hints', 'ccp'][/code:28df9]
to this:
[code:28df9]compiz_command = [compiz, '--only-current-screen', '--replace', '--sm-disable', '--ignore-desktop-hints', 'ccp'][/code:28df9]
if you need this minor fix, here is my re-package:

New packages are in X11:XGL repository now. Packages from that repo are the one's that will most likely go in 10.3.
I would like you all to thoroughly test them.
Plugins and ccsm related bugs/enhancement request should be filed to [url:d357f]htt://bugs.opencompositing.org[/url:d357f].
Package related bugs can be brought up right here.
This is how to get them:
Step 1:
[code:d357f]rpm -e compiz compiz-gnome compiz-kde and whatever else you put in with compiz.
rpm -e compiz-git compiz-git-gnome compiz-git-kde and whatever else you put in with compiz-git.[/code:d357f]
Step 2:
Install yast2-metapackage-handler from 'noarch' here: [url:d357f]http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Tools/[/url:d357f]
Step 3:
Run konqueror as user (not root)
Go here for openSUSE 10.2: [url:d357f]http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=compiz&p=1&baseproject=openSUSE%3A10.2[/url:d357f]
Go here for openSUSE Factory: [url:d357f]http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=compiz&p=1&baseproject=openSUSE%3AFactory[/url:d357f]
The packages are grouped in patterns, you can choose to install any one of these patterns:
compiz-fusion-all - Installs Compiz, Fusion-Plugins, CCSM, Emerald/GTK/KDE Decorators.
compiz-fusion-gnome - Installs Gnome specific Compiz, Fusion-Plugins, CCSM, GTK Decorator.
compiz-fusion-kde - Installs KDE specific Compiz, Fusion-Plugins, CCSM, KDE Decorator.
compiz-fusion-emerald - Installs Compiz, Fusion-Plugins, CCSM, Emerald Decorator.
compiz-fusion-devel - Installs Compiz and Fusion-Plugins development packages
If one click doesn't work, launch the installer manually by giving following command in shell as user (not noot):
[code:d357f]/sbin/YaST2 MetaPackageHandler http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/SUSE_Factory/compiz-fusion-<CHANGEMETOWHATEVERYOUWANT>.ymp[/code:d357f]
Please note these instructions are for beta testers only, for others who likes their system stable, please stick to the packages that are working for them.

i am running suse 10.3 alpha 5, so i'm a little behind on releases.
your packages for 10.2 worked perfectly, installation and operation.
i really wanted to try the "factory" version though since my install falls into that category.
everything installed fine, and i mean 100% perfectly... no problems at all.
but when i started fusion the emerald theme didn't kick in, so i manually ran emerald --replace & which resulted in these errors:
[quote:5a934]/usr/share/themes/Gilouche/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:42: Clearlooks configuration option "menuitemstyle" is not supported and will be ignored.
/usr/share/themes/Gilouche/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:43: Clearlooks configuration option "listviewitemstyle" is not supported and will be ignored.
/usr/share/themes/Gilouche/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:44: Clearlooks configuration option "progressbarstyle" is not supported and will be ignored.
emerald: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libwnck-1.so.22: undefined symbol: g_once_init_enter_impl
[1]+ Exit 127 emerald --replace[/quote:5a934]
i just wanted to let you know. emerald is a sticking point for me, i gotta have it! to resolve this i am probably going to have to uninstall/reinstall gnome and libwnck and eventually jump back on your "10.2" version of compiz-fusion.

ugh, sorry for the spam, but i forgot to mention one thing...
on your page here : http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=c ... USE%3A10.2 (http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=compiz&p=1&baseproject=openSUSE%3A10.2)
the buttons to install the packages didn't work correctly (for me at least) in konqueror.
when i clicked them they were trying to go to "http://whatever" - i had to copy and paste the url in to konqueror and precede it with "data:text/ymu," like this:
data:text/ymu,http://whatever
this might be something i screwed up in konqueror.

@Cyborg
small issue - I'm running the latest non-git (from xgl repo, installed with ypm) and in ccsm the icons are not displayed, everything else appears to be working fine. The icons are installed in /usr/share/ccsm/images/
question: using ypm can I switch between git and stable without having to first unintall the installed ones? Your previous post implies not, so would it be possible to use the same naming in both repos so this would be possible?
fyi - the Konquer install worked fine for me

Anyone else missing the icons in ccsm?
Try changing the permission chomd +r /usr/share/ccsm/images -R
Both the repo naming has been kept separate as we would not want mixing of stable and unstable repos and user knows what they are using when reporting problems. Or they know what to expect when there is -git at the back ;)

Solved it - not sure what the exact problem was but it happened when I updated some gtk/gnome rpms and was resolved by running "touch /var/adm/SuSEconfig/run-gtk ; SuSEconfig". It was not caused by my compiz-fusion update, sorry for the post.

i installed latest packages for opensuse10.2 from the home:cyberorg-repo.
and i also have the problem with lost icons in ccsm.
i debugged the start of ccsm with "strace -f", and found the following:
stat("/var/tmp/ccs-settings-070803-build/usr/share/ccsm/images/plugin-screensaver.svg", 0x7fff54121130) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
it tries to find the svg-files under /var/tmp/ccs-settings-070803-build/usr/share/ccsm/images/
this directory, of course can not exist.
i think this is a bug...
other problems:
most of the time, X freezes, when i quit kde.
it doesn't come back to the login-screen. screen stays black.
with beryl, this works without any problem.
i have to do a "init 3 ; init 5" on console as root to do this job....
[/*:m:7e6e4]
all images (for instance the images for splash) are searched in "/data" which is a directory which, of course, also can not exist.
the images themselfes also are not existing.
the splash-background-images-default is "/data/splash_background.png".
the directory "/data" does not exist, AND the file "splash_background.png" does also not exist in any of the compiz-git-packages.[/*:m:7e6e4]

will there be a fix for that in the near future?
going back to nvidia-driver 9755 is not possible for me, coz only latest 100.14.11 driver works good with notebook display.
so, until a real fix for that probloem comes out, i have to do a init 3; init 5....

fusion-icon is a third party add-on from what i gather. there is really no need for an rpm because these are just python scripts that get installed to your /usr/bin and /usr/share/fusion-icon folder, along with the icon/image. so, you don't have to build anything, just install.

misc stuff...
last sunday i tested all of the available repos (cyberorg 10.2 & factory, and x11:xgl 10.2 & factory) and as i mentioned, the factory installs caused problems (emerald and gnome were broken, had to re-install gnome to fix). the x11:xgl 10.2 repo was working fine sunday, but i went back to the cyberorg 10.2 repo cuz i like the extra plugins (possibly my undoing).
normally i am always on the cyberorg 10.2 repo versions because even though there have been issues, that repo has always worked fine for me.
last night i tried to re-test the x11:xgl 10.2 repo and now it is giving me errors when i try to install it.. gconf2 showed up a lot in the dependency solver. i didn't feel like risking breaking gnome/emerald again, so i decided to stick with cyberorg 10.2 repo for the time being.
what i have been building up to: is there a safe way to kill compiz?
i have tried ps -ef|grep compiz to get the pid, then using kill (pid). i have tried kill -TERM `pidof compiz`. i have tried rcxdm stop/start and restart. i have tried logging out of kde from the menu. i have tried restarting from the menu. i have tried ctrl+alt+backspace to kill the x server.
no matter what i do, in all of these cases, at least 4 out of 5 times my computer completely lock
