View Full Version : Beryl won't load any new application + no keyboard input

After upgrading my debian (dist-upgrade) to the latest unstable repository, beryl has started behaving weird. It would start ok without any error messages, but then keyboard input would go dead. No new applications would launch. (It seems that they are started in the background, but just not showed on the screen). At the same time, all beryl animations include cube/wobbly windows... work.
In short after upgrade
-> No more Keyboard input
-> No new gtk applications load (not even gnome menus)
-> beryl animations work as usual
Has anybody encountered this problem before.
My machine specs: Debian unstable/testing
ATI fglrx : 8.35.6
xserver-xorg: 1:7.1.0-18 (locked)
xserver-xgl: 7.0.0.git.20060725-0ubuntu2.1 (locked)

since your dist-upgrade,,, have you tried re-installing beryl
repeat ALL the steps you took to install beryl the first time

I have exactly the same problem on a fresh install of beryl on a debian testing, with a nvidia video card (GeForce MX 440).
In facts, the windows do open, but are completely invisible. I tried compiz to compare, and the behaviour is exactly the same.
Cube animation works fine, but is useless without visible windows...

Yes. I have this script which purges all beryl debs and resinstalls them.
[code:d5a00]
apt-get --purge remove beryl beryl-core beryl-manager beryl-plugins beryl-plugins-data beryl-settings beryl-settings-simple emerald libberyldecoration0 libberylsettings0 libberylsettings0-gconf libemeraldengine0 emerald-themes heliodor beryl-plugins-unsupported
apt-get install beryl beryl-core beryl-manager beryl-plugins beryl-plugins-data beryl-settings beryl-settings-bindings emerald libberyldecoration0 libberylsettings0 libberylsettings0-gconf libemeraldengine0 emerald-themes heliodor beryl-plugins-unsupported
[/code:d5a00]
I have even tried different versions of beryl (from 0.1.9999.2 to 0.3 ), with the same result.

After reading, thought and adapted a post from a gentoo forum, I downgraded libxrandr2 package from version 2:1.2.1-1 to version 2:1.1.0.2-5. (It forced me to uninstall GTK-engines, but they are useless with beryl, right ?)
It seems to have solved the problem, now I can see my new windows and re-maximize my minimized windows.
Hope this can help some debianists...
Regards. Korova.

Thanks korova, but unfortunately that doesn't work on my machine.
Trying to downgrade libxrandr2 leads to a dependency nightmare. Apt removes xserver-* pkgs along with whole suite of gnome, making the system use(x)less.

I had the same problems with Ubuntu Feisty - I reverted to the the default ATI driver (ie removing ALL references to fglrx/XGL) and it works fine.
That was after a week of WSOD and many attempts at getting XGL to work.

Well, good for you that you can use opensource radeon driver. I have ATI FireGL 5250, which is not supported by radeon yet. Only option is ATI's fglrx package.
What specific changes were made in libxrandr2 that it broke whole window manager, and has not been fixed yet in debian ! ?

I can't answer your question, but I will point out that the same thing is currently true in FreeBSD with the nvidia drivers. Users have to downgrade the libxrandr library from the one in the ports tree.
