After getting Compiz and Beryl running well on my desktop, I thought it'd be cool to use on my laptop (also 7.04), but it's old and has an ATi Rage Mobility 128 M3 with 16MB RAM. The CPU is Pentium 3 850MHz and it has 512MB system RAM. I got the 3d to work only after setting default color depth to 16, and now all of the screensavers work as well as 3d games that I ran in WINE. It uses the "ati" driver and I added some things to xorg.conf like "AIGLX" "true". The ubuntu Desktop Effects doesn't work though, but is it possible using Xgl or another setup?

You can try Xgl, but I have my doubts. The hardware and/or drivers don't support non-power-of-two textures, which is a problem when it comes to beryl/compiz.
