View Full Version : [SOLVED] Weird workspace error.

This is my first post here. Well, I've only been using Beryl for about a week. I installed Ubuntu 7.04 and Beryl last weekend. And I keep coming across this weird workspace issue. When I'm using Metacity everything works fine. But when I load Beryl, only the first workspace in my switcher will show any applications.

The applications are open and you can see them in the cube. But the workspace switcher shows that only the first workspace has an app open on it.

And when I use the workspace switcher to try to find the missing app, there's nothing there and then everything else disappears too (even those in the first workspace). And after that, I have to switch over to the first workspace from the switcher to get everything back. Because if I switch to the cube, everything is gone across the cube. It's like it switches me to a completely different set of 4 workspaces where nothing has been opened.

Try this: Open up some huge window that will change the outlook of your cursor. Then rotate the cube to make it disappear.
Now hover your mouse over where the window should be. Does the cursor change form?
If so I guess you have the same problem that I[/url:c25ad]and/or he got.[/url:c25ad]
No cure yet.

Nope. Don't have that problem. I don't have any issues what-so-ever when I rotate the cube - everything stays where they're supposed to be. My problem just seems to be an issue with the workspace switcher. And even when I use the switcher, I don't have that issue. It just acts like it moved me to a different set of 4 workspaces.

I'm figuring that there might be a setting that I've overlooked in my Gconf. I did try to use Compiz for a while and it really did mess up my settings. I fixed everything that I could find, but the answer to this small issue still eludes me.

make sure you have only 1 workspace set in gnome which will
give you 4 viewports "default" in beryl
in gnome and kde, 4 workspaces = 16 viewports in beryl

That makes perfect sense. Each box in the workspace switcher references a separate set of 4 workspaces. I went though the Gconf and set all of the settings that I could find to "1". But it still didn't fix it. I changed it under Metacity and Compiz. Are there anymore that needs to be set to 1?

Now the settings under "SCHEMAS" are all set to "schema" and can't be changed.

well not everything needs to be set to "1"
before you activate beryl, you can right click on your pager and see that it is set to "4"
then after you turn beryl on that should automatically switch to "1"
in beryl-manager --> General Options --> Main..... you should have
Horizontal Virtual Size = 4
Vertical Virtual Size = 1
Number of Desktops = 1

Thanks. Now that's working like it's suppose to.

You know, people should heed that warning on the Compiz' Desktop Effects control panel! Workspaces really will start to rearrange themselves and you can't get it to quit when you switch back to Beryl! Oh well, this is what it takes to learn something new.

Thanks again! :D
