I have finally got around to using the clone plugin and it is quite cool in a wierd kind of way :)
It is designed for people with multiple outputs, but it can still be used by us single screen people.
Before you start make sure the clone plugin is loaded, and that this option is unchecked.
/apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/detect_outputs
Now you need to work out how many outputs you want to break your screen up into and work out where they will go. I use a 1680x1050 screen and I have it broken up into these pieces.
1024x1050+0+0
680x525+1024+0
680x525+1024+525
These options go into /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/outputs
This splits my screen into 3 parts, one on the left and 2 on the right. Everything looks the same after but there are actually 3 outputs. If you have any black sections on the screen then it means your size calculations are wrong.
Now here is the fun stuff :)
On the left side of the screen press Super+Shift+Button1 (or whatever you have clone configured to). This should zoom the left side of the screen down to the pointer. Now drag this over to the right of the screen and let go. The screen should fill the output you made on the right :D If you want to get rid of it, just drag the cloned output back to the left in the same way.
The dimensions are entered like this
(output width)x(output height)+(x position)+(y position)
You will need to work them out for your monitor
